Description

This wide-ranging, four-year MEng degree integrates a year of Master’s level study and an industrial placement.

Your first three years mirror those of our

  • the design of machines and drives
  • industrial automation and robotics
  • semiconductor device fabrication

In the fourth year, you complete an industrial placement in the UK or abroad, helping you boost your CV and develop industry contacts.

You complete design projects to showcase your skills to future employers. For example, developing instrumentation for intelligent vehicles.

Course Content

Our degrees are divided into Stages. Each Stage lasts for an academic year and you need to complete modules totalling 120 credits by the end of each Stage.

- A Levels

AAB including Mathematics and one other science subject (preferably physics) but excluding General Studies and Critical Thinking. GCSE Physics or Dual Award Science (minimum grade B) required if not offered at A or AS level.

- Scottish Qualifications

AA-AB at Advanced Higher, including Mathematics and preferably Physics. Physics required at Higher Grade B if not offered at Advanced Higher.

- International Baccalaureate

36 points with Mathematics and Physics at Higher Level grade 5 or above.

- Irish Leaving Certificate

Candidates will normally only be considered for foundation year entry. All applications will be considered on an individual basis.

- Access Qualifications

Please see BEng entrance requirements. Accrediting body requirements will sometimes mean that students may only be considered for entry to BEng.

- BTEC Level 5 HND

Overall Distinction, with Distinctions in mathematics and science units. Units must include both Analytical Methods and Further Analytical Methods or equivalent. Students studying the HND outside of the UK, and who have studied subjects corresponding in syllabus and level to Stage 1 of the degree and with Distinction in Mathematics and other engineering subjects, may be considered for Stage 2 entry.

- BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (formerly BTEC National Diploma)

Candidates will normally only be considered for entry to BEng.

- Cambridge Pre-U

D3,D3,M2 in Principal Subjects including Mathematics and one other science subject (preferably physics). GCSE Physics or Dual Award Science (minimum grade B) required if not offered at a higher level.

- PARTNERS - A Levels

BBB including Mathematics and one other science subject (preferably physics) but excluding General Studies and Critical Thinking. GCSE Physics or Dual Award Science (minimum grade B) required if not offered at A or AS level.

- Foundation Year

If you dont have the right mathematics and/or science qualifications for direct entry, you can take an Electrical and Electronic Engineering foundation year:

  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering with Foundation Year BEng Honours (H604)
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering with Foundation Year MEng Honours (H606)

This will provide you with the knowledge you need to progress to one of our three- or four-year Electrical and Electronic Engineering degrees.

- International Foundation Programmes

If you are an international student and you do not meet the academic and English language requirements specified above, you should consider a preparation course at INTO Newcastle University, which will help to prepare you for study on this degree course. INTO Newcastle University is based on the University campus and offers a range of courses including the International Foundation in Physical Sciences and Engineering.

For this degree you will need a minimum score of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent.
