The MEng is an integrated masters degree in engineering that offers you an opportunity to fulfil the educational requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. The MEng course aims to meet professional development needs as specified by the Engineering Council and relevant engineering institutions in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). Entry to this qualification is either via our BEng (Hons) (B65 or Q65) or an accredited engineering bachelors degree from another institution.

The MEng must be completed within four years from the date of graduation of the undergraduate degree.

This qualification is accredited for Chartered Engineer status by the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED) and the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE). A pathway through our MEng is also accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

For this masters degree you require:

Either an honours degree accredited by one of the licensed bodies of the Engineering Council and 15 credits from the following compulsory module:

  • Towards chartership: professional development for engineers (T398) 15 Credits

This course develops reflective and key skills, and promotes the personal and professional skills necessary to the education and career of an aspiring Chartered engineer.

Or the OU's Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (B24) or Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (B65)

And 60 credits from any postgraduate technology module with a code beginning T8, TU8, (or the discontinued versions TXX8 or TUXX8), but excluding any project modules.

And 30 credits from any postgraduate computing, mathematics, science or technology module with a code beginning T8, TU8, (or the discontinued versions TXX8 or TUXX8), M8 or S8, but excluding any project modules.

And 30 credits from the following compulsory module:

  • Team engineering (T885) 30 Credits

This course about working collaboratively is based around two residential weekends. You´ll work in a small team on an engineering project, finally submitting a report.

If you do not hold a qualification from The Open University you will first need to contact the Mathematics, Computing and Technology Faculty. You will be required to provide documentary evidence of your honours degree that shows the date of qualification. In addition you will need to provide evidence that this has been accredited by one of the licensed bodies of the Engineering Council. You can check that your degree has this accreditation by visiting the Engineering Council website. English Language Requirements IELTS band: 6 TOEFL iBT® test: 87 IMPORTANT NOTE: Since April 2014 the ETS tests (including TOEFL and TOEIC) are no longer accepted for Tier 4 visa applications to the United Kingdom. The university might still accept these tests to admit you to the university, but if you require a Tier 4 visa to enter the UK and begin your degree programme, these tests will not be sufficient to obtain your Visa. If you are studying towards a taught masters or doctorate you won't be eligible for financial support towards your module fees or towards most study costs.
