This programme is designed for those who wish to combine the study of English language with the study of contemporary literature and literary theory.

It is taught jointly by the Department of Linguistics and English Language, and by the Department of English and Creative Writing. You construct your own individual scheme of study by selecting six courses out of a wide range of options, including at least two English Language modules and two Literary Studies modules.

Aims The programme seeks to provide extensive and up-to-date knowledge and understanding of:

* some of the most central areas of English language study, including particularly its uses and functions in different literary genres and its role in the social world (especially in relation to issues of gender, class and power)
* some of the main theoretical approaches to the study of English language and of discourse more generally
* some of the main developments in different periods of English literature
* some of the main developments in current literary theory
* the most relevant research methodologies for the investigation of English language and literature.

The programme involves a 6+1 modular structure: you select six taught modules out of the choices offered by the two Departments, including at least two English Language modules and two Literary Studies modules. You will also have to attend at least one of the following research methodology modules:

* Research Methods in Linguistics and English Language (offered by the Linguistics and English Language Department over terms 1 and 2),
* Research Methodology (offered by the English and Creative Writing Department in term 3).

The first of these modules can also be taken for credit, in addition, you can actively but informally attend one or two more modules out of interest without submitting a piece of coursework.

Admissions CriteriaThe scheme will admit British and international applicants who normally hold at least an upper second class degree or equivalent from an approved university. For applicants for whom English is not a first language, the University requires either a British Council IELTS score of 6.5 or above, a TOEFL score of 580/237 or above, GCSE English grade C or above, or a Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English grade C or above.
