Environmental Science — Soil, Water and Biodiversity (EnvEuro)

Water is the main carrier of substances in the terrestrial environment. It connects the atmosphere and the aquatic environment to organisms. Therefore, the main focus of the EnvEuro Master is the use of natural resources in Europe and their related impacts on health and the environment. The programme's objective is to provide students with the analytical and management tools as well as the environmental technologies needed to develop sustainable production systems in areas experiencing high pressure on natural resources.

The programme was developed by four European universities in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Sweden. They are members of the Euroleague for Life Sciences and all among the best in their field in Europe. Students obtain a double degree upon completion of their studies at the two universities by receiving two full Master's degree certificates.

Educational organisation

The two-year programme comprises four semesters. It consists of both compulsory and elective modules and a Master's thesis. This ensures a strong focus on each of the specialisations while leaving room for individual interests. Students study at one of the four partner universities for their first year and switch to another partner university for their second year.
The partner universities are:

• University of Copenhagen, Denmark
• Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Sweden
• University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Austria
• University of Hohenheim, Germany

The programme starts in August with a mandatory, one-week intensive introduction course in Copenhagen, Denmark, where the foundation for the compulsory e-learning module "Environmental Management in Europe" is laid.

Study abroad unit(s)

EnvEuro is a double degree programme, in which students study one year at their home university as well as one year at their host university. Therefore, studies abroad are an integral part of this Master's programme.

Internships

Internships are not compulsory, but recommended. The internship must be organised by the student and has to fit the schedule of the programme. Upon request, the Career Center may assist in finding an internship.

Course objectives

This Master's programme is designed to give insights into European principles used in all aspects of environmental management of European ecosystems. As a consequence, graduates are able to identify and solve problems related to natural resource management in Europe in a professional way.

Candidates qualify for environmental careers in the private and public sectors related to:

• Analysis, monitoring and modelling
• Environmental technology
• Environmental regulation, planning and control
• Impact assessment and risk analysis
• Research and education

Academic requirements

Above-average Bachelor of Science (BSc) or equivalent degree in agricultural, environmental, natural sciences, or a related field.

Costs of living

Living expenses in Germany are relatively high. Each student should calculate at least 700 EUR per month for accommodation, food, health insurance and public transport.
For the first month, students should expect higher costs, as they have to pay registration fees.
Rent for a single room varies from 220 EUR to 400 EUR per month.

Job opportunities

Hohenheim offers enrolled students assistant jobs on campus. Students are responsible for managing working hours and these hours should not conflict with their studies. Working off campus is also possible according to the Aliens Act. However, please be aware that without good knowledge of German, jobs are quite difficult to find.

Arrival support

Assistance with accommodation, enrolment, and health insurance is provided by the international office. The programme coordination office can help with the organisation of the studies and other formalities.

Services and support for international students

German language courses for beginners and advanced learners are offered during the semester. Students can participate in ten introductory days with trips and presentations to get to know the university facilities and local surroundings.
"Warm-up seminars" (intercultural seminar, facts and skills seminar) are offered before the start of the programme.
Upon request, a personal mentor from the teaching staff can advise students on appropriate study profiles as well as support students in planning their studies in a smooth and goal-oriented way.

Accommodation

There are five residence halls on campus. All rooms are furnished and have telephone and internet access. Kitchens, bathroom facilities, and washing machines are available, and these are mostly shared with flatmates. Personal belongings like towels and bed sheets are not provided. Depending on size and quality, prices for rent vary from 220 EUR to 400 EUR per month.
