Course Content

Course Aims

This degree program allows well-qualified Bachelor graduates to undertake a fourth year of study with a major component involving a research project and production of a research thesis. Graduates will obtain specialist knowledge in conceptual, scientific and technical competencies related to: Botany, Ecology, Geology and Zoology. Graduates will be able to improve their career prospects in these areas or to proceed to higher degree studies.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  • demonstrate an understanding of the conceptual and theoretical scientific knowledge that underpins their chosen field of study;
  • demonstrate high-level technical competencies in the field, laboratory and practical skills related to their chosen field of study;
  • demonstrate the ability to design, analyse and interpret environmental data to develop solutions in the context of technical, management and/or scientific frameworks; and
  • have developed high-level written and oral communication skills, and acquired skills to locate and critically evaluate scientific information through undertaking an independent scientific research project.
  • Graduate Attributes

    Knowledge of a Discipline

    Students will be required to read literature on practical, conceptual and theoretical aspects of their chosen field of study, and provided with the opportunity to obtain specialist knowledge in a selected discipline through an independent research project.

    Communication Skills

    Students will be required to express well-organised, logical and clearly written research thesis. Students will be exposed to techniques for improved oral and written communication skills, and required to submit literature reviews and present oral seminars on their research findings.

    Global Perspectives

    Students will examine examples of models, theories and case-studies of the ecology and management of ecosystems from around the world relevant to their chosen field of study.

    Information Literacy

    Students will be taught how to access the literature (especially on-line resources), how to evaluate the robustness of literature sources (discrimination skills) and how to critique available information. Students will be expected to demonstrate high-level research capacity in the production of a research thesis.

    Life-Long Learning

    The ability to be a critical thinker and an objective decision maker is a key life-long skill for environmental scientists. This will be instilled be the experiential learning dimensions of the degree where reflection on performance reveals alternative pathways to explain phenomena.

    Problem Solving

    Students will be challenged to critically examine literature, established theories and models, and techniques from a range of disciplines to address contemporary environmental issues. Conducting an independent research project will require students to develop and answer critical research questions.

    Social Responsibility

    Now more than ever, and as concern for the environment intensifies, scientists are increasingly being called away from the role of scientist and into policy and public consultation. Students will be exposed to concepts of social responsibility within the course and will be required to exhibit social responsibility when interacting with other students.

    Team Work

    All students undertaking practical work in the field and laboratory will be regularly working in teams. Students will be exposed to training in team skills and perspectives throughout the course, particularly in a professional workplace situation as part of their research project.
