The Master's degree program in Environmental Sciences at the University of Trier offers students an interdisciplinary education aimed at understanding and addressing complex environmental issues. This program is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of key areas such as ecology, environmental management, sustainable development, and environmental policy. Students will engage with both theoretical concepts and practical applications, equipping them with the skills necessary to analyze environmental problems, develop innovative solutions, and implement effective management strategies.

The curriculum covers a wide range of topics including environmental chemistry, geosciences, environmental economics, and data analysis. Emphasis is placed on integrating scientific knowledge with practical skills, such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), environmental impact assessment, and environmental monitoring techniques. Students will have the opportunity to participate in fieldwork, laboratory analyses, and project work to gain hands-on experience.

The program encourages an international perspective and promotes collaboration across disciplines. It prepares graduates for careers in environmental consultancy, policy advising, research institutions, and non-governmental organizations. Additionally, students will learn about the legal frameworks and ethical considerations involved in environmental decision-making processes. The program's flexible structure allows students to specialize in areas of particular interest, such as climate change, renewable energy, or conservation.

The University of Trier's Environment Sciences Master's program is distinguished by its close ties with regional and international environmental initiatives, providing students with valuable networking opportunities. The teaching staff consists of experienced researchers and practitioners passionate about fostering a sustainable future. Graduates of this program will be well-equipped to contribute effectively to environmental solutions on local, national, and global levels, making a meaningful impact in the pursuit of environmental sustainability and resilience.

Educational organisation

The Master's programme in Environmental Sciences (ES) is a full-time programme designed for two years (four semesters). Based on a common teaching scheme in the first semester, the programme offers three alternative fields of specialisation from the second semester onwards:
  • Environmental Monitoring and Pollution Assessment (ES I)
  • Environmental Remote Sensing and Modelling (ES II)
  • Environmental Conservation and Restoration Management (ES III)
The study programme includes both compulsory and optional courses, so that the enrolled student can develop individual fields of competence and qualification.
A variety of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, laboratory work, field projects, and excursions are offered.
The Master's programme is completed with a thesis, to be written in the selected field of specialisation. The Master's degree will be awarded based on the credit points acquired during the two-year-programme and the results of the Master's thesis.
Successful alumni will be qualified to begin national or international PhD programmes.

Compulsory (interdisciplinary) modules for the fields of specialisation (ES I, ES II, ES III) are:

ES I: Environmental System Analysis, Multivariate Statistics, Environmental Chemistry, Aquatic Pollution Assessment, Environmental Analytical Chemistry, Regional Biomonitoring Project, Ecotoxic Effects of Environmental Pollutants, Interdisciplinary Research Project

ES II (Focus on Environmental Remote Sensing): Environmental System Analysis, Multivariate Statistics, Geospatial Data Analysis, Advanced Remote Sensing Data and Analysis, Ecosystem Remote Sensing and Modelling Concepts, Remote Sensing of Global Change Processes, Interdisciplinary Research Project

ES II (Focus on Environmental Meteorology): Environmental System Analysis, Multivariate Statistics, Satellite Time Series Analysis, Numerical Modelling in Meteorology, Monitoring and Remote Sensing in Meteorology, Land Surface Atmosphere Interactions, SVAT-Models and Integration of Remote Sensing Data, Interdisciplinary Research Project

ES III (Focus on Environmental Conservation and Restoration Management): Environmental System Analysis; Multivariate Statistics; Polluted Site Remediation; Environmental Management and Resource Economics; Soil Use and Sustainable Management; Interdisciplinary Research Project; Nature Conservation, Restoration and Protection

Optional modules (ES I, ES II, ES III) of the first semester (20 LP): Environmental Monitoring Strategies, Fundamentals of Environmental Remote Sensing, Geological Hazards and Management, Atmospheric Boundary Layer, Advanced Aspects of Environmental Soil Sciences

Further optional (interdisciplinary) modules can be chosen according to the fields of specialisation (ES I, ES II, ES III), for example: Environmental Chemistry and Risk Assessment, Global Climate Change and Energy Resources, Soil Biology and Soil Functioning, Interdisciplinary Excursion and Field Project, Paleoclimate and Paleoenvironment, Fluvial Systems, Vegetation Ecology, Social Hydrology, Introduction to Geoinformatics

Internships

Internships during the Master's programme are not planned.

Forms of assessment

Oral and written examinations, practical examinations, reports, and presentations will be required every semester. At the end of the programme, the Master's thesis must be written. In total, 120 credit points have to be acquired. (30 credit points per semester)

Course objectives

The Master's programme in Environmental Sciences (ES) is designed for undergraduates in environmental, life, and geosciences who intend to specialise in different fields of environmental assessment, sustainability, monitoring, and management issues. Based on advanced methodological skills and systems analysis, students will be trained for jobs in public authorities, private agencies, relevant sections in related industries, insurance companies, and others. Within their specialisation, students have the opportunity to develop individually modulated fields of competence and qualification. The successful alumni will also be qualified to begin national or international PhD programmes. The Master's degree entitles them to follow a scientific career in universities and research institutions.

Language requirements

Applicants must provide proof of their English skills: TOEFL 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based), 79 (Internet-based), CAE, or equivalent.

Academic requirements

  • Degree (BSc or equivalent) in environmental sciences or similar
  • Personal statement

Enrolment fees

Trier University does not charge tuition fees. Students only have to pay a social fee ("Semesterbeitrag") of 250 EUR for the first and 240 EUR from the second to the fourth semester. The fee includes a semester ticket covering public transport in Trier and the region of Trier. Moreover, this fee acts as a contribution that benefits Trier Student Services (Studierendenwerk Trier) and the Student Union. It also enables students to buy meals at reduced prices at the university's canteens.

Costs of living

Students should expect expenses of approx. 670-750 EUR per month. For instance, housing costs vary between approx. 200-250 EUR (basic dorm room) and 380 EUR (single apartment). A meal in the student cafeteria costs approx. 2.60-5 EUR.

Job opportunities

Trier University provides career services in cooperation with the German Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit): http://www.career-service.uni-trier.de. Located on campus, the career service called Jobpassage is designed to support students and graduates in all career-related matters such as internships, full- and part-time jobs, and future career opportunities.
