Environmental Social Sciences with a Year in Professional Practice

The BA in Environmental Social Science focuses on the environment primarily from the point of view of the social sciences and the humanities. At Kent, we recognise the need for adaptability in order to meet both immediate and future environmental challenges, so we encourage you to engage with a rich variety of environmental understandings from a wide range of academic perspectives, including anthropology, politics, economics, ecology, philosophy, law and the creative arts, making connections across the University curriculum. You can also develop relevant practical skills in areas such as biodiversity monitoring, practical habitat maintenance, and guiding and interpretation, and can choose to do an independent research project on a subject reflecting your interest in the environment.

Additionally, in the third year you will spend a minimum of 24 weeks working in professional practice through one or more placements, either in the UK or abroad.

Year in industry

Stage S involves a minimum of 24 weeks spent on placement at one or more organisations whose work is relevant to your degree programme. During the placement you will work under the direction of a designated line manager within the host organisation, with additional support from the University via a named member of academic staff. You will be working on one or more tasks that are agreed in advance, for example you may contribute to a management plan, a policy report, a consultation process, a piece of applied research, or development of a set of educational materials.

• Access to HE Diploma:The University of Kent will not necessarily make conditional offers to all access candidates but will continue to assess them on an individual basis. If an offer is made candidates will be required to obtain/pass the overall Access to Higher Education Diploma and may also be required to obtain a proportion of the total level 3 credits and/or credits in particular subjects at merit grade or above.
