The European Master in Animal Breeding and Genetics (EM-ABG) offers high quality training, both in terms of scientific knowledge and didactic skills, provided by six excellent university groups within the EU. The EM-ABG concentrates on use of quantitative and molecular genetics for animal breeding purposes. This involves the following concepts:
- understanding of and measuring genetic variation (statistical genetics)
- molecular genetics and bioinformatics (genomics)
- design and evaluation of breeding programmes (animal breeding)
- understanding of intra-animal biological relationships

The EM-ABG involves a range of species: farm animals (ruminants, pigs, poultry and horses), fish and companion animals (dogs, cats, horses, as well as natural populations (in wild or zoos).

Students can choose their own universities of preference among six partner universities for the first and for the second year of EM-ABG, and will receive a double Master's degree (one for each of the universities the individual students attend).

The universities involved are:
- Wageningen University (WU) (The Netherlands) as coordinator
- Univerity of Natural Resource and Applied Life Sciences (BOKU), Vienna, Au
- Agro ParisTech, FRance
- Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Uppsala, Sweden
- The Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB), Aas, Norway

The consortium has established a central application procedure at the EM-ABG co-ordinator (Wageningen), using a joint application form. The co-ordinating university selects the students that meet the following formal admission conditions:BSc degree or equivalent degree in Animal Science or related fields with a number of prerequisites (e.g. knowledge of Statistics and Genetics).Grade point average needs to be at minimum 70% of the maximum score.Result of TOEFL exam paper based has to be at least 580, computer based at least 237 or internet based at least 92-93. An alternative is a minimum score of 6.5 from an IELTS test. The Consortium Committee can admit excellent third-country students with a somewhat lower TOEFL score (550 cq 213 or 79-80 and IELTS 6.0).
