Description

The French major exposes students to cultures, literatures and a language that play a central role in world history. Through a wide-ranging curriculum, students majoring in French acquire critical skills, advanced capabilities in reading and speaking, as well as an in-depth knowledge of French and Francophone culture that is highly valued in graduate and professional schools and by employers. Our major affords specialization in one of three tracks: literature, culture and linguistics.

In all three, the courses are taught by a highly distinguished faculty, one of a handful in the U.S. whose combined expertise covers all periods of French literary history. Our curriculum touches on an unusually varied range of topics including literature, visual arts, gender studies, language, current political issues, music, film and theater.

French majors are also offered many opportunities to develop a more direct knowledge of contemporary France through the French Department’s Summer Program in Paris; a semester- or year-long study abroad program; internships; or teaching assistantships in France sponsored by the French government. Our graduates have gone on to successful careers in many different fields, from K-12 education to business, to translation and interpretation, medicine, international relations, scientific research and law.

Course Content

Students majoring in French may choose one of three distinct options: French cultural studies, French linguistics, or French literary studies. All French majors are strongly urged to spend at least one semester in residence in the French House and/or to participate in a program of study in a French-speaking country.

• French Cultural Studies: This option is designed to provide students with a critical knowledge of the culture, civilization, and history of France and Francophone areas.
• French Linguistics: This option focuses on the study of the nature of the human language faculty and aims at providing an understanding of what it means to "know" a language. While the curriculum centers on the French language, it acquaints the student with the central questions of modern linguistics and introduces elementary tools of formal syntax, phonology, and morphology.
• French Literary Studies: This option is designed to acquaint students with a wide spectrum of French literature and to provide them with the skills and methodology for the critical analysis of literary texts, history, and theory.
