The curriculum is devoted to an interdisciplinary outlook on globalisation and adapted to interests and strengths of each participating institution. Each semester consists of four areas of study: globalisation, social theory, methodology, and various electives according to current research. Rigorous theoretical training is combined with methodology, so that students are prepared to write a thesis on the basis of original research. After the third semester, students complete an internship or intensive language training.

Educational organisation

The Global Studies Programme (GSP) is a two-year Master's programme. The mission of the programme is to study social sciences in various cultures and regions. Students begin the programme in Germany at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. They spend the following two semesters on different continents at our partner institutions to gain experience conducting fieldwork as they engage in research projects. In the fourth semester, they complete their Master's thesis, which is accompanied by a colloquium in Berlin or at one of the partner institutions that students attend during the second or third semester of study. Students have the chance to take additional courses, e.g. in languages or IT, or complete an internship programme.
The course of studies comprises three semesters and a final thesis semester, plus a possible internship after the third semester. The first semester (April to July) is spent in Berlin, the second (August to December) in Buenos Aires or Pretoria, and the third (January to May) in New Delhi or Bangkok. The final semester starts in October and is spent in Berlin or at one of the partner institutions mentioned. At the end of the programme, students who studied at FLACSO in the second semester are awarded a joint degree by both Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and FLACSO in Buenos Aires.
Courses are defined, designed, and carried out by each institution independently. Their general framework is defined by the module titles, while the specific content is discussed with the other institutions in order to guarantee a coherent course of studies. The language of instruction is English, but students may attend courses in local languages or foreign languages.

Study abroad unit(s)

Participants spend the second and third semesters abroad. In the second semester, students attend courses at either FLACSO in Buenos Aires (Argentina) or the University of Pretoria (South Africa). In the third semester, students may attend courses at either Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi (India) or Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok (Thailand).
Participants have the opportunity to earn a joint degree with FLACSO. Other agreements are also currently being discussed.

Internships

Students must complete a six- to eight-week internship (full-time) or intensive language training after the third semester. Coordinators can assist students in finding suitable internships.

Forms of assessment

Forms of assessment depend on participation, written assignments, and completion of a thesis.
