The Department of Geography provides an intellectually challenging environment that encourages the investigation of the "where" and "why" of various social, economic and environmental phenomena. Our faculty members are committed to teaching and mentoring in a collaborative environment. We provide personalized tutelage and encourage students to work closely with faculty. The UB Geography Department offers five specializations Environmental and Earth Systems Science Geographic Information Science Health and Human Geography International Trade, International Business, and Economic/Human Geography Urban and Regional Analysis.

  • The program typically requires one to two years of full-time study, although students can pursue the degree on a part-time basis. The department highly encourages students to consider internships to expand their learning experience.
  • Throughout their studies, students work closely with two faculty members who provide guidance and supervision. Students may either choose a concentration or in consultation with his/her adviser, design a program of study that corresponds with the student’s interests and satisfies the general requirements of the M.A. program. Students can pick one of the following concentrations or pursue a general M.A. degree (30 credits) as long as the required courses are taken: GEO 500, GEO 501, and GEO 505.
  • The M.A. program requires 30 credit hours and completion of either a research project or competency portfolio. Students will select their option in consultation with their advisor.

GRE requirements:

There is no mandatory university minimum, but our department uses a guideline of 300 (combined verbal and quantitative) and 313 is required for funding consideration.

TOEFL requirements:

The University minimum is 79 iBT, however, our department generally desires a higher score. The TOEFL score must be dated within two years of the time the application.  

Abrahams-Woldenberg Field Scholarship

The Abrahams/Woldenberg Field Scholarship is intended to support field research in Physical Geography / Environmental Science by graduate students in the Department of Geography, University at Buffalo. Awards made from this fund will be guided by Professors Abrahams’ and Woldenberg’s desire to support and encourage this field-based research.

Hugh W. Calkins Applied GIS Award

An award to honor Dr. Calkins career in the field of Urban Planning and Geography has been established. The award will be given annually to a graduate student from the University at Buffalo's Geography department, who best applies the principles he developed and taught for many years. The Hugh W. Calkins Applied GIS Award will be given annually to a current graduate student from the University at Buffalo's Department of Geography in order to advance his/her studies in the following year.

Charles H.V. Ebert Scholarship for Physical Geography

University at Buffalo Undergraduate or Graduate students pursuing degrees in Physical Geography (Earth Systmes Science).
