The Department of Geography offers graduate programs leading to an MA, MSc, or PhD. Geography’s graduate program focuses on research, supplemented by course work, that reflects the diverse research interests of the faculty. The objectives of Geography’s graduate program are to:
- achieve standards of excellence in graduate education;
- develop independent research abilities in a specific area of Geography while enhancing career-relevant skills;
- develop expertise in a specific area of Geography via a candidacy examination, research proposal, coursework, and a dissertation at the doctoral level;
- encourage critical thinking;
- permit the development of a flexible program, in collaboration with an advisory committee, while meeting the standards of academic excellence.
The program’s vision is to produce outstanding Geography graduate students who are ready to meet the challenges of an ever-changing world by fostering critical thought, independence, and integrity in research and learning. The program seeks to develop students’ expertise through a guided program of independent research in a specific area of Geography while enhancing career-relevant skills

Requirements
- Online application form. Fill out the application, including information for all post-secondary institutions at which you have been registered, and upload all required documents.
- Payment of your application fee online with a credit card. The online application form and application fee must be submitted before your entire application package can be processed. 6
- Contact each of your referees to confirm their willingness to complete an assessment report. You will need to supply their names and emails as part of your application.
- Copies of unofficial transcripts from all institutions attended will be required for upload at the time of application. If you are offered admission, you will be required to submit official documents confirming your information. At this point, if we receive unofficial documents they will be requested again, as we require official documents for final offers of admission. If you have incomplete courses not listed on your official transcript, please provide a list of courses in progress and their credit weight with your application.
- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
For the internet-based TOEFL (IBT), we require a minimum of 90 with the following minimum section requirements: Listening 20; Speaking 20; Reading 20; Writing 20. The minimum acceptable TOEFL score is 575 on the paper-based test. Individual departments may set a higher standard. This requirement will not be waived. - IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
A minimum Overall Band Score of 6.5, with no score of less than 6.0 on each individual component on the Academic IELTS is required. Note than any IELTS test, other than the Academic test, will not be accepted. - Transcripts
- Two letters of reference (assessment reports)
