Tohoku University is located in Sendai, the largest city in the Tohoku region of Japan with a population of more than 1 million. While being at the center of business and politics in the Tohoku region, Sendai is also known for its rich nature and is often called ‘The City of Trees’. Combined with the convenience of a large city and relaxing atmosphere of nature, Sendai makes it an ideal place for research and education. For more than half a century, the Graduate School of Economics and Management of Tohoku University has educated more than 10,000 professionals and researchers, building up the reputation for its teaching quality both inside and outside Japan.
Starting from 2014, we have launched the new program called Global Program in Economics and Management (GPEM), specifically targeting students who aspire to become global professionals. The goal of GPEM is to offer graduate level education in economics and management and to equip the students with following skills; 1) an ability to address the problem and to elaborate the solution, 2) an ability to understand the problem in a global context, and 3) an ability to collaborate with people with different language, culture, and values. GPEM is designed for both foreign and Japanese students. As such, foreign students will be taking the same classes with Japanese students and this experience will nurture an international collaboration skill which is indispensable in a global business context.
The Graduate School of Economics and Management has offered the program called International Program in Economics and Management (IPEM) for foreign students until 2013. GPEM will be the successor to IPEM, now accommodating Japanese students to the program. By promoting the international collaboration between foreign and Japanese students, we believe that the program will become even more successful and global.
Following the tradition of IPEM, GPEM will be mainly taught in English and it is possible to obtain the master’s degree by taking the courses taught in English only. At the same time, for those who wish to take the courses taught in Japanese, abundant opportunities are available. Also, for those who wish to continue research beyond master’s level, an opportunity is available to enter the doctoral program after finishing GPEM. In summary, GPEM offers rich professional opportunities and we welcome the aspiring foreign students to join the program
