Requirements

  • Highers; ABC or BBB
  • A Level; CC
  • ILC: BBC
  • Essential Requirements: A portfolio assessment is required for entry Art & Design and English or similar subject that requires writing (Higher/A Level/ILC-H).

Portfolio

Your submitted UCAS application will be reviewed to check that you meet the entry requirements and fit the course requirements academically. If you have met these criteria, you will receive a letter/email requesting the submission of a digital portfolio. There will be clear instructions regarding what kind of work you should submit and how to submit it. Furthermore, there will be a design task that you must complete and send with your folio work. This task will assess your ability to think and create like a designer and level the playing field a bit since all applicants will be required to complete the same task. Final selection will be based on the assessment of your portfolio and task, academic results and UCAS application. What kind of work should I put in my portfolio?A portfolio is an opportunity to show the work you have created as a student and as a creative individual. This includes a variety of work from school or college that emphasises your creative and artistic skills. Any creative work you have begun or completed outside of school/college is also relevant. A good rule of thumb is – if you are proud of it and you think it expresses who you are as a designer, then include it in your portfolio. Creativity is wide-ranging and we are looking for skills that are clearly related to graphic design, but also those that are perhaps more conceptual or artistic. This is especially relevant for Year 1 entry. We do not expect you to have stellar typographic and layout skills; rather, we want to see a passion and drive for artistic and creative expression. This includes drawing, photography and craft/making skills. As a Year 3 direct-entry applicant, it is more important to show that you have successfully covered the subjects taught in Years 1 and 2 of the programme here at GCU. Consider this when putting together your portfolio. We want to see evidence of your design ability – especially in terms of concept development, typography and layout – not just your software skills. Your process is as important as your final outcome, so we are incredibly interested in the research and design decisions that led to the final piece. Sketchbook work showing your design process is very important. ‘Development’ boards showing 5 versions of the same drawing for Highers do not count as development. Sketches, mood boards, photographs, scribbles, mind maps, failed attempts, research, etc do.

Work Experience

No work experience is required.
