Improving quality and efficiency in healthcare by focusing on the design and evaluation of medical-technological, organizational and patient-centred interventions and their application.

Health Sciences investigates how financing systems, organizational structures, administrative processes and social factors affect access to healthcare, the quality and cost of healthcare, and ultimately our health and well-being. Its foundation is in management principles and in the social sciences. Health Sciences is essential to improving health and patient-centred care. Health scientists at the University of Twente know how to translate results from fundamental and applied clinical research into state-of-the-art healthcare provision. The central focus is on improving patient-centred care using medical and information technology. At the start of the programme you will choose between two specializations: Health Services & Management and Health Technology Assessment & Innovation. With a Master of Science degree in Health Sciences, you will be ideally suited to tackle a high-level job in healthcare, such as a management post at a healthcare institution, a policy-maker with a government agency, or even a global healthcare innovator. You might also opt for a career in research or take up a position with a semi-governmental agency or a healthcare insurer.

Programme internationalization:

  • Studying abroad is optional.

This programme has a workload of 60 ECTS.

Specialities:

Health Services and Management:

The specialization in Health Services & Management looks at improving and optimizing the way in which care is organized at the institutional level and between different institutions. It explores how to optimize healthcare processes, process quality, and safety in the healthcare sector. The specialization focuses on the evaluation and implementation of new healthcare concepts. For example: how can healthcare providers work together using healthcare innovations and IT resources to treat and care for people with common chronic disorders? A new element in this specialization is the logistics course, which focuses on operations management and optimizing healthcare processes.

Health Technology Assessment and Innovation:

Evaluation of medical technology and technology policy are the key elements in this specialization, which focuses on the effectiveness and cost implications of policy and new medical technology. As an example, we are studying the most cost-effective way of using a revolutionary PET scanner to screen for tumours. How will its introduction affect the organization and policy of healthcare and communication with patients and healthcare insurers? Imagine a newly developed cytostatic drug that produces fewer side effects. Can you simply go ahead and administer this drug? Where does the responsibility for such a decision lie? How are cases like this governed by legislation and regulations? New technology has made it possible to tackle disease at the molecular level, opening the door to tailor-made treatment and prevention. But do we really want to equip everyone with their own individual healthcare monitor? What are the medical, financial and organizational implications of such a development? You will explore questions relating to patient empowerment and the introduction and financing of new technology in the healthcare sector.
