Description

With a firm grounding in economics developed in the first year, the course allows you to specialise in international economic issues such as international trade patterns and policy, globalisation and its impacts.

This course encourages you to become a ‘global thinker’. You will focus on transnational interactions of firms and individuals through market exchanges and trade. You will also consider the impact of globalising processes due to developments in the communications media, technological and environmental changes, and the search for a new economic order.

You should be well prepared for possible employment in national and international organisations, including nonprofit and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), in business and government.

If you choose this course you will benefit from:

  • the option to apply for a work placement in the UK or internationally. Some placements are salaried, the amount varies from company to company, but is currently in the range of £15,000 to £20,000 per year;

  • interactive learning approaches; you will take part in economic experiments including a trading pit game, international trading game and the chance to run your own production line;

Course Content

In the first year you will study subjects including Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Mathematical Techniques for Economics, Data Analysis Skills for Economics, Current Issues in Applied Economics, and Developing Academic and Professional Skills 1.

Discussions on international issues are strongly embedded in the economics curriculum throughout each of the three years of study. Specialist topics include World Business and Trade, International Economics, Development Economics and Economic Policy in the European Union.

These will introduce you to contemporary issues such as policy co-ordination in euro-zone countries, causes of the global financial crisis and global imbalances, causes of rising food prices, deadlock in the Doha trade talks, progress on Millennium Development Goals, and impacts of the rise of China and India on European living standards.

You also have the choice to take an optional placement or study abroad year after completing your first two years.

Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated seminars, and workshop practical classes. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

Funding

Merit Scholarship Scheme

Merit Scholarship scheme: £1,000, in year one only and based on academic performance.

  • Available to all international students applying for full-time undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at Coventry University.
  • Scholarships are allocated on the basis of academic merit. (Postgraduate applicants must hold 2.1 or equivalent, undergraduate applicants must hold A-levels or equivalent at grades BBC)
  • There is no separate scholarship application process: all undergraduate applications from self-funded international students from any non-EU country and postgraduate applications from international, will automatically be considered for a merit award. You will not have to do anything, if you are successful you will be notified in due course by the International Office.

University Research Studentship Scheme

Occasionally, funding becomes available to enable the University, either centrally, through one of the faculties or from other sources, to offer research studentships in specified topics or fields of study.

Science Without Borders
