Labour Law: European and International Labour Law

European and International Labour Law is a unique master track in Europe; only in Amsterdam can you take a full programme in English dedicated to labour law and industrial relations.

The approach of the programme is also unique since it studies labour law from both perspectives: international (EU and ILO) and multi-national. Therefore the programme offers courses on the law of the European Union, the Council of Europe and the International Labour Organisation, as well as comparative courses to study and discuss the various national approaches to labour law and industrial relations. Not only the programme is international, the teaching staff is too, including professors and guest lecturers from various countries of Europe, among which the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Spain and the UK. Although the master is not an elective one, the group of students is relatively small (up to 30), offering students more than sufficient personal attention to promote a successful completion of the programme. With demand rising steadily for specialised international labour lawyers due to increased worker mobility and global sourcing, students sometimes even receive job offers before graduation.

The programme consists of 60 ECTS credits and will cover one full academic year. This year is divided into two semesters (a summer/autumn semester and a winter/spring semester), containing two periods each.

This programme consists of compulsory courses (totalling 35 ECTS credits), optional courses of 15 ECTS credits, and a final thesis (10 ECTS credits).
All courses are 5 ECTS credits each and will be taught during a full block of 7 weeks. Exams will take place after each block.

The mentioned optional courses are offered by the Faculty of Law of the University of Amsterdam. Other optional courses can be taken after the approval of the programme director.

Knowledge minimum: Applicants have a basic knowledge, e.g. at least one course equivalent to 5 European Credits (ECTS), in Labour Law. Applicants must also have basic knowledge of European Union Law. The Amsterdam Law School offers introductory courses in September in European Union Law and Public International Law, which are mandatory for those students who do not have a strong background in these areas. Previous education: Applicants for the programme must have finished a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Law. Knowledge minimum: Basic knowledge of European Union Law, basic knowledge of Labour Law.
