MSc Law and Finance is one of the very few specialised law and finance postgraduate programmes in the UK.

Our programme will enable you to develop knowledge and skills in relation to the law, economics and finance governing international business and finance in the UK, in Europe and at a global level.

You will gain an in-depth understanding of the interdisciplinary issues of law and finance, and acquire valuable skills to address matters of financial law, business and regulation.

Experts from both the School of Law and Leeds University Business School teach the core and optional modules in this interdisciplinary programme, and we have carefully chosen each module so that you develop a sound understanding of the key issues in law and finance.

Compulsory modulesCorporate Law explores the legal nature of companies with an emphasis on the limited liability company and the separate personality of such companies. You will examine the constitution of companies and issues relating to contracting. You will also address issues surrounding corporate governance, directors duties and shareholders, and takeover regulation.

International Law of Credit and Security is designed to develop a critical understanding of the general principles of the Law of Credit and Security with emphasis upon their application to particular transactions. You will explore English and US law as well as considering more general international developments, including the United Nations Commission for International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) legislative guide on secured transactions.

Postgraduate Legal Research Skills aims to prepare you for blegal research required for seminar preparation, coursework assignments and for writing dissertations in law. The module focuses on instilling the fundamental research skills that you need to undertake any type of legal research.

Quantitative Methods provides an understanding of quantitative methodologies and ways to analyse and present data by focusing on business mathematics, descriptive statistics, probability, hypothesis testing and techniques for statistical analysis.

Accounting for Managers considers the preparation and interpretation of financial statements, and principles of costing. It moves on to examine the use of accounting information for planning, decision making, performance measurement and control.

Corporate Finance provides a critical understanding of the principles for effective financial decision-making in a corporate enterprise. You will study corporate financial objectives and agency theory; risks, returns and portfolio theory; the efficient market hypothesis; and capital investment decisions. The module also examines the valuation of equity, capital structure decisions, payout policy decisions, and mergers and acquisitions.

Dissertation (in Law or Business) will enable you to develop your research and writing skills with reference to a topic in Law or Finance. You will describe the topic and provide a critique based on the chosen premise.

Programme structureYou will be taught through weekly and fortnighly seminars and lectures over two semesters. You will also receive separate dissertation supervision.

AssessmentYou will be assessed through coursework or exams.

The entrance requirements for our postgraduate taught schemes are that you must normally possess an upper second class honours degree or non-UK equivalent.If you do not meet the standard academic entry requirements, we will give consideration to relevant and substantial work experience of more than five years. In this case, we will require a full CV, describing the relevant work experience, with your application.We also encourage applicants with professional qualifications or substantial professional experience to apply.The School has a minimum requirement. * TOEFL score on the internet-based test: at least 92 with, at least, 22 in listening, 22 in reading, 23 in speaking and 22 in writing. * A minimum IELTS (academic) score of 6.5 with at least 6.5 in listening and reading and at least 6.0 in writing and speaking.The School keeps its requirements under review and may request a higher level of proficiency. Language Centre pre-sessional courseThe Language Centre also provides the Academic English for Postgraduate Studies pre-sessional course that is designed to help international students develop the necessary language and academic study skills required for successful study on a taught postgraduate degree programme.
