The title, Juris Doctor, comes from the United States where it's a graduate entrance three-year law degree granted by an accredited US law school. The Juris Doctor was adopted for use in Australia for a postsecondary legislation application resulting in entrance to the legal profession. It is differentiated from a Master of Legislation which is seen as an advanced law application. The Juris Doctor (JD) is just a Master Degree (Extended) and scholars aren't eligible to make use of the honorific title'physician'.
