Real Life Learning

Newcastle Law School is well known for the strength of its clinical legal education and real-life, experience-based learning. LLM students can combine advanced study and research with practical opportunities to build professional skills. You may choose to prepare a legal research report for a partner organisation, participate in a legal clinic or other internship, and attend events to interact with industry, government and community groups.

High Quality Teaching in Core and Emerging Areas

Choose from a broad range of subjects and tailor the LLM to your interests or career area. The program offers many courses in the field of International Business Law and cutting-edge electives in areas such as environmental and climate change law, international child and family law, and human rights law.

You will learn from lecturers who are experts in their field, participate in interactive seminars and have access to quality online learning resources. With one-to-one supervision by one of our experienced faculty members, you may choose to complete an Advanced Legal Research project in an area of special interest to you.

Many courses will be offered in intensive blocks over a four-day period.

The two core courses in legal research will provide advanced training in contemporary approaches to legal research, focusing on both the design and implementation of a legal research project.

The range of elective courses available in the program will allow you to develop specialised knowledge in areas relevant to your career and professional interests.

Flexible study options

Many LLM courses will be delivered in intensive mode, with attendance at classes over four days during the semester, possibly on weekends. If there is sufficient student demand, some intensive courses may be delivered in Sydney.

The location and mode of delivery of the LLM courses (i.e. whether in Newcastle or Sydney) will at all times remain at the discretion of Newcastle Law School.

Courses in the field of International Business Law will expand your knowledge of legal rules applicable to a variety of private transactional settings. You will explore the role of law and legal regulation as it intersects with business practice.

Advanced legal research component

Advanced Legal Research I (compulsory) - In your first semester, you will develop the specialised knowledge and skills required to design a legal research project in an area of your choice.

Advanced Legal Research II (compulsory) - In your second semester, you will finalise the design of, and carry out, your chosen research project. You may have the opportunity to conduct your research on a real-life issue for a partner organisation.

Advanced Legal Research Project (elective) - You may choose to complete an Advanced Legal Research project in an area of special interest to you. A faculty member with relevant research experience will provide one-to-one supervision. We will provide guidance on publishing your work if you would like to develop a publication profile.

Students will be required to have completed the following requirements for admission to the program:An AQF level 8 Law qualification, such as a:a) Bachelor of Law (Honours) degree either embedded (320 units) or ‘end-on’ (80 units) or equivalent law degree from a recognised tertiary education institution, orb) Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Law or Legal Practice following the completion of an AQF Level 7 Bachelor of Laws degree, orc) an AQF Level 7 Bachelor degree in Law and have completed a minimum of two years relevant work experience in a legal environment (RPL). RPL will be assessed by the Program Convenor through the consideration of a statement outlining the relevant work experience. Transcripts and detailed CVs must be provided to the University.d) One of the degrees below: i)a five year combined law degree program (400 units of learning in total, at least 240 cognate) or ii) a four year Bachelor of Laws degree program (320 units of learning, all cognate) or iii) a three year graduate entry Bachelor of Law program following the completion of a three year non-cognate degree (480 units of learning in total, at least 240 cognate) English Language Requirements IELTS band: 6.5
