In this programme you will have the option to study language from a theoretical perspective or to focus on the more practical aspects, such as translation or text analysis.
The Leiden University Centre for Linguistics is unparalled in the variety of languages taught and studied, ranging from languages such as English, French and Italian, to African languages, Native American languages and Indonesian. In addition, Leiden offers a wide range of theoretical approaches and perspectives in how language is studied. Within the specialisations you will have the opportunity to create your own master's programme, reflecting your specific fields of interest. Leiden linguists generally are in demand for their communicative and practical skills, such as their command of a specific language, their knowledge and skills in translating, and their editorial talents.

Chinese Linguistics:
With effect from September 2013, this programme will be offered as a specialisation within the Linguistics programme.
Language diversity of Africa, Asia and Native America:
In this specialisation you will gain in-depth knowledge about how linguistic structures from languages spoken around the world differ vastly from our familiar Indo-European languages.
Language and Communication :
This specialisation focuses on the interaction between languages and the environments in which they are used, which includes the influence of culture.
Italian Language and Linguistics :
In this specialisation you will study the Italian language from a typological perspective, as well as from a historical and sociolinguistic point of view.
German Language and Linguistics :
In this specialisation you will learn to analyse language by studying the constitution of text - spoken as well as written - in its social, medial, cultural and historical context.
French Language and Linguistics:
This specialisation offers you in-depth courses in a wide range of linguistic topics on theoretical and applied linguistics, including language acquisition, syntax, and semantics.
English Language and Linguistics:
This specialisation offers a wide range of specialised courses and research topics, both theoretical and applied. In addition, you have the option to combine this with other language-related courses.
Comparative Indo-European Linguistics:
This specialisation covers the study and comparison of a large number of interrelated languages in Europe and Asia, offering you a unique and inspiring programme.
Translation in Theory and Practice (Dutch/English):
This specialisation aims to familiarise you with the many different challenges a translator faces and with the large variety of reference works, information sources and tools available.
Theoretical Linguistics and Cognition :
In this specialisation you will concentrate on studying the complexity of natural languages, ranging from their syntactic structure to how humans process and produce language.
