This MSc approaches marine systems as an integrated socio-ecological system through focusing on three spheres of marine systems:

* Marine natural systems: exploring diverse scales and functions of key marine biomes, habitats and species, spanning islands, coasts, estuaries, continental shelves, polar seas and global oceans.
* Marine policy systems: examining different ways in which society governs coastal and marine ecosystems and services, through formal policies, laws and informal cultural customs and practices.
* Marine built systems: looking at blue growth e.g. the ingenuity and impacts of human built environments in marine settings, from re-shaping coastlines for cities, travel and trade, to the urbanization of ocean environments through innovations in energy infrastructure.

This MSc draws upon the breadth and diversity of the University of Edinburgh through contributions from different schools, and disciplines, e.g. GeoSciences (e.g. Ecology, Environmental Geosciences), Law, Engineering, as well as other partners, e.g. the Scottish Association of Marine Science. The philosophy of this MSc is to move beyond traditional disciplinary paradigms, seeking integrated approaches to learning, problem solving and critical thinking. A combination of core courses, optional courses and field work enables students to develop skills and capacities around personal intellectual, analytical, practical, methodological and experiential goals. The MSc is ideal for students with strong backgrounds in natural sciences, social sciences, law or engineering seeking to expand their disciplinary foundations towards coastal- marine focused research and practice.

Careers

Working at international, national or local levels for thinktanks,consultingfirms, government and NGOs where an integrated understanding of marine ecosystems, policy and infrastructure is needed.

This MSc programme consists of 6 taught courses (120 credits) and 1 dissertation research project term (60 credits). Courses vary in delivery and assessment, but typically include: lectures, seminars, workshops, fieldtrips, group presentations, essays and policy papers.

You should have a UK 2:1 first degree (or its international equivalent) in natural sciences or social sciences. Work and/or volunteer experience reflecting your interest in marine issues is recommended: English Language Requirements:IELTS 7.0 (with no score lower than 6.0 in each section) TOEFL-iBT: Total 100 (with no score lower than 20 in each section). Students applying to Marine Systems and Policies may be eligible for funding. Previously awards from £1,000, and up to the full cost of the MSc have been awarded:
