MATILDA is an European Master Degree in Women’s and Gender History. Set up as part of the Erasmus programme with funding from the European Commission, DG Education and Culture, MATILDA is designed for students wishing to develop expertise in women’s and gender history, as well as in European history, and who are interested in intercultural exchange.
The programme of study is spread over two years, includes 120 ECTS points and links four leading European universities in an exciting, innovative and unique venture. The partner institutions are the
- Universität Wien (coordinating institution),
- the Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski,
- the Université Lumière Lyon 2,
- the Central European University (CEU) in Budapest.
Students can expect to study in at least two different countries over the course of four semesters.
Programme structure
The programme is a mix of foundational modules and electives. Each of the five partner institutions offers courses in core subjects in Women´s and Gender History (theory, methodology and practice), which are completed in the first semester. In semesters 2 and 3, specialist options (electives) are studied. Semester 4 is devoted to writing the master thesis.

- Thesis: 70-100 pages (2.800 characters incl. blanks) + bibliography
- Submission: 30 June
- Assessment: 2 reviews by 2 faculty from different institutions.
Intensive Programme
- Students will attend a two weeks intensive summer programme, at which faculty from each of the 5 universities will be present.
- Students will be asked to prepare a short paper related to the chosen theme of the Intensive programme, which they will present in small groups.
- Students will also have the chance to discuss their proposed thesis topic with the faculty.
Student Mobility
Students will normally spend semester one and two at their start university and the following one or two semesters at a partner university. Student mobility in semester 2 and/or 3 and/or 4 is subject to capacity*. After semester two all students will attend a two week Intensive Programme together with students and teachers from all participating universities. Mobility can be funded by the ERASMUS scheme according to regulations of the start university and the National Agency in this country. In some cases funding other than ERASMUS can be applied for. Language proficiency for mobility is the responsibility of the sending university.
* mobility to CEU is restricted to semester 3 and/or 4
Entry Requirements
In addition to meeting the start university´s general entry requirements (a.o. language proficiency), MATILDA applicants are required to submit the following documents:
- One motivation letter in German, English or French;
- Two letters of academic reference (in closed envelopes or per email) ;
- A recent CV;
- One copy of BA certificate (History, Humanities, Social Sciences).
Proffeciency in German
In order to be admitted to a degree programme at the University of Vienna, you have to prove sufficient knowledge of German.
The following proofs of German knowledge are accepted:
- School-leaving certificate from a German-speaking country or an Austrian or German foreign school
- School-leaving certificate from an EU/EEA country with subject German
- Graduation of upper school ("Oberstufe") at a school where the teaching language is German
- Graduation of cumpolsory school (until 6th grade) at a school where the teaching language is German
- Graduation of a study programme of at least 3 years at a university or school where the teaching language is German
- Graduation in the subject German at an accredited foreign university
Additionally and solely the following certificates are accepted :
- Österreichisches Sprachdiplom – B2 Mittelstufe Deutsch (MD)
- Goethe Institut – Goethe Zertifikat B2
- Sprachenzentrum der Universität Wien – B2/2
- Language center of another Austrian university - B2
- Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer StudienwerberInnen (DSH)
- Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kulturministerkonferenz Stufe II (DSD II)
- Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache (TestDaF), level 4 minimum in all parts of the test
- telc Deutsch B2
- Österreichischer Integrationsfonds (ÖIF) - B2-ÖIF-Test
In case of partial tests only the level B2/2 is accepted, B2/1 is not. The certificates may not be older than three years.
