Description

Bioengineering embraces a wide range of engineering and medical techniques - such as biomechanics, biotribology, biomaterials and biosensors - to help humans and animals to stay physically mobile for longer.

For example, through the design of new artificial joints, investigating new materials to assist in the repair of the soft tissues, and reviewing the effectiveness of rehabilitation treatment.

This professionally accredited degree will equip you to work in this fascinating area.

Studying at a top 10 UK university for mechanical engineering, you take specialist modules including:

  • BioMEMS
  • design for human-systems integration
  • biomaterials and tissue engineering

You showcase your professional skills - including project management and the application of design methodology - through an industry-relevant team project in your final year.

Quality and ranking

Newcastle is ranked in the top 10 UK universities for mechanical engineering in The Guardian University Guide 2014.

Mechanical Engineering at Newcastle also ranks in the top 200 universities in the world in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2014.

Requirements

All candidates are considered on an individual basis.

If your qualifications are not listed here, please see our additional entry requirements pages to find out which other qualifications are considered.

If you dont have the right mathematics and/or science qualifications for direct entry, please see our Foundation Year information below.

- A Levels

Typically AAA including Mathematics and one of Physics, Chemistry or Further Mathematics, but excluding General Studies.

GCSE Physics or Dual Award Science (minimum grade B) required if not offered at A or AS level.

- Scottish Qualifications

Typically AAA at Advanced Higher including Mathematics and one of Physics, Chemistry or another Mathematics.

Higher Physics or Chemistry required at grade B if not offered at Advanced Higher. Two Highers at the required grade (in different subjects to those offered at Advanced Higher) may replace a third Advanced Higher.

- International Baccalaureate

37 points with Mathematics and preferably Physics at Higher Level grade 5 or above. Physics required at Standard Level grade 6 or above if not offered at Higher Level.

- Irish Leaving Certificate

Candidates will normally be considered for Foundation Year only. All applications will be considered on an individual basis.

- Access Qualifications

Please see BEng entrance requirements. Accrediting body requirements will sometimes mean that students may only be considered for entry to BEng.

- BTEC Level 5 HND

Overall Distinction grades including Distinctions in mathematics and science units. Units must include both Analytical Methods and Further Analytical Methods or equivalent. Students studying the HND outside of the UK, and who have studied subjects corresponding in syllabus and level to Stage 1 of the degree and with Distinction in Mathematics and other engineering subjects, may be considered for Stage 2 entry.

- BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (formerly BTEC National Diploma)

Candidates will be considered for Foundation Year entry. Please see Engineering with Foundation Year for specific entrance requirements.

- Cambridge Pre-U

D3,D3,D3 in Principal Subjects including Mathematics, and one of Physics, Chemistry or Further Mathematics.

GCSE Physics or Dual Award Science (minimum grade B) required if not offered at a higher level.

- PARTNERS - A Levels

Typically AAB-ABB including Mathematics and one of Physics, Chemistry or Further Mathematics, but excluding General Studies.

GCSE Physics or Dual Award Science (minimum grade B) required if not offered at A or AS level.

The PARTNERS Programme is Newcastle Universitys supported entry route for students from identified schools and colleges. Find out more about the PARTNERS Programme.
