HS Kaiserslautern - University of Applied Sciences perceives itself as a modern university for applied sciences and design. It offers over 40 different Bachelor's and Master's programmes. More than 5,700 students and around 160 full-time professors learn, teach and carry out research at five departments on four campuses in Kaiserlautern, Pirmasens and Zweibrücken. Numerous partnerships with national and international institutions and enterprises not only guarantee practice-oriented study programmes, but also high academic quality.
With approx.100,000 inhabitants, Kaiserslautern is the industrial, technological and educational centre of the West-Palatinate region. Known as "K-Town", it is also home to an additional 48,000 US citizens based at Ramstein Air Force Base. Still, Kaiserslautern has maintained its character of a typical medium-sized German city with a wide range of social, cultural and economic activities. The woods around Kaiserslautern are hilly, ranging in height between 150 and 350 metres. The name of the city refers to its medieval importance to Emperor (Kaiser) Frederick I "Barbarossa". In subsequent centuries, Kaiserslautern was involved in numerous political conflicts resulting in Electoral Palatinate (Kurpfalz), French and Bavarian rule at various times. Industrialisation started around 1850 and transformed Kaiserslautern from a provincial town into an industrial centre within a short time span. The city was heavily damaged during World War II and rebuilt afterwards. Over the past 20 years, there has been a growing shift from mainly industrial activities towards dynamic spin-offs from both the Technical University and the University of Applied Sciences. Kaiserslautern also has a decades-long tradition in soccer, with the home team playing in the federal league. The city was one of the twelve host cities during the Soccer World Cup 2006 in Germany.
As the intake of this programme is typically approx. 25 students per semester, the university can provide extensive support and welcome services to foreign students. The International Office offers cross-cultural trainings, a number of excursions, advisory and various social activities throughout the year.
