Objectives:

* Mapping the heterogeneous material properties of the human heart; critical to identifying the most appropriate digital materials.
* Identifying the most appropriate 3D printing protocol: The heterogeneous material properties and intricate internal architecture means that producing a geometrically accurate heart model is complex, complicated further by a need to use durable and robust materials.
* Integrating a resistive pressure equivalent to the circulatory system: A sophisticated mechanical system will be developed to replicate the non-linear resistive pressure experienced during CPR, as a consequence of the viscoelastic behaviour of the blood vessels surrounding the heart.
* Model validation: Initial validation will consider the geometric comparison between the model and the original computer tomography (CT) data, whilst echocardiography will be used to ultimately validate fluid flow through the heart during contraction representative of the healthy cardiac cycle.

Research degrees are focused on independent study. Unlike taught students, you'll work with your supervisor to identify your study needs. Some research degrees include taught elements that focus on research conduct or in depth knowledge required for your project.

Supervisors: Dr P Theobald (Cardiff); Dr R Johnston (Swansea)

Requirements

In the first instance interested applicants are invited to send a CV and covering email/letter.

Academic Criteria:

* First degree at 2.1, or non-UK equivalent, as minimum.
* Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in the English language (IELTS or equivalent)
* Residency Criteria: The award is open to Home and EU students. International Students are permitted to apply for studentships provided that they have funds to cover any shortfall in international fees.

English Language Requirements

IELTS band: 6.5

IMPORTANT NOTE: Since April 2014 the ETS tests (including TOEFL and TOEIC) are no longer accepted for Tier 4 visa applications to the United Kingdom. The university might still accept these tests to admit you to the university, but if you require a Tier 4 visa to enter the UK and begin your degree programme, these tests will not be sufficient to obtain your Visa.

The IELTS test is most widely accepted by universities and is also accepted for Tier 4 visas to the UK- learn more.

Funding

This studentship is generously funded by Sér Cyrmu National Research Network in Advanced Engineering and Materials. It will be for three years and cover fees at the Home/EU rate with a stipend equivalent to the RCUK rate.
