The Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling program is designed to prepare students to be mental health counselors in a variety of settings including schools, community agencies, hospitals and clinics, as well as in U.S. and international settings.

Why should I enroll?

  • The degree prepares you for a variety of careers in healthcare, including opportunities in hospitals, medical centers, outpatient clinics, private practice and organizations.
  • Your career options include:
    • Mental health counselor
    • Private practice (business owner)
    • School-based mental health
    • Case management
    • Substance abuse counselor
    • Behavioral health administrator
  • You can concentrate in key job market areas: substance abuse counseling (CASAC-T), global mental health counseling, and infant mental health (involves an additional year of grant-funded training through Adelphi’s Institute for Parenting).
  • You can focus electives in forensic psychology.
  • You will develop clinical competencies through participation in the national counseling examination and completion of a practicum and internship.
  • All of the classes are conveniently offered during the evening.

The 60-credit graduate-level clinical training program prepares students to develop distinct competencies as counseling professionals. Courses include Mental Health Counseling Practice, Clinical Assessment, Trauma, Psychopathology, Family Counseling, Research Ethics and Multicultural Issues. You will find an overarching psychodynamic orientation with strong contributions from cognitive, behavioral and other evidence-informed therapies. The goal of the program is to provide a strong evidence-informed clinical knowledge base in psychological and counseling theory, research and clinical interventions in preparation for independent practice.
