Adelphi University is a highly awarded, nationally ranked, powerfully connected doctoral research university offering exceptional liberal arts and sciences programs and professional training with particular strength in its Core Four—Arts and Humanities, STEM and Social Sciences, the Business and Education Professions, and Health and Wellness. Adelphi is dedicated to transforming students’ lives through small classes, hands-on learning and innovative ways to support student success.

Founded in Brooklyn in 1896, Adelphi is Long Island’s oldest private coeducational university. Today Adelphi serves almost 8,000 students at its beautiful main campus in Garden City, New York—just 23 miles from New York City’s cultural and internship opportunities—and at dynamic learning hubs in Manhattan, the Hudson Valley and Suffolk County, and online.

More than 100,000 Adelphi graduates have gained the skills to thrive professionally as active, caring citizens, making their mark on the University, their communities and the world.

  • College of Arts and Sciences

When Adelphi College was founded in 1896, it was committed to the belief that all frontiers of learning could be advanced. It was the challenge of each succeeding generation of students to learn from the great minds of the past and, when the lessons were learned, to go beyond them. This continuum of learning, in which the past comes alive and the future becomes enabled by it, has been Adelphi’s mission from its inception.

As Adelphi University has developed over more than a century, it has maintained this philosophy of liberal education—most centrally in the College of Arts and Sciences. It is here that the University offers its students not merely learning in specific disciplines, but the liberal education that permits the disciplines to be seen in proper perspective. In addition to offering specialized study, the College of Arts and Sciences offers to explore something else: Why?

Arriving at this “why” is the obligation of the humanities, those studies that preserve and interpret the intellectual and cultural heritage of the world throughout the centuries. Literature is part of this heritage, as are philosophy, history, fine arts, music, dance and drama, language and linguistics, the social sciences, interdisciplinary studies and the bedrock sciences of chemistry, biology, physics, and mathematics. Each of these fields is studied on its own terms and with its own goals, which often include solid practical application and career opportunities. But they also interrelate with and illuminate each other in vital ways.

The skills that a student develops in the course of a liberal education are those that are proper to each field in which she/he studies—fluency in languages, adeptness in mathematics, competence in the employment of chemistry, and so forth—but there are also powers, which one may call skills, that cut across all disciplines: research competence, analytical skills, critical thinking, and the ability to express verbally and in writing what one has learned. These are the components of a liberal, humanistic education.

The faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences would have its students develop in the broadest possible manner. Classroom learning is a part of the student’s education, but that learning should always be pushing the student beyond the classroom, stimulating him or her to explore that which has yet to be revealed. Thus the student is encouraged to pursue original research, to undertake collaborative work with peers and mentors, to study in a variety of internships both here and abroad, and to avail himself or herself of the opportunities that the University offers to meet visiting artists, scholars, and world figures.

This is the College of Arts and Sciences’ way of bringing about the promise of the University’s motto, ‘The truth shall make us free.’”

Our classes are small and supportive, whether they’re taught in a traditional classroom setting or online. The curriculum is challenging, but the schedule is not—we teach at multiple locations in convenient formats. Our faculty members are engaged social work scholars with extensive teaching experience. They’re also recognized leaders in their respective fields. Learn more about our degree, certificate, and continuing education programs.

  • College of Professional and Continuing Studies

We want our students to leave here with confidence—and the knowledge and skills they need to excel—because our students are motivated and they generally come to us prepared to learn and grow. For over 35 years, we’ve been helping them do just that. More than 7,000 of our graduates have gone on to careers in business, social services, health care, law, education and the humanities. We offer degree, non-degree, and continuing education programs for nontraditional students, and they all benefit from our efficient admissions process, affordable tuition and fees, and flexible scheduling and advising.

Since 1974, we’ve been preparing our graduates to advance as innovative leaders. And by now, we’re really good at it. In fact, we’re leading the field.

Adelphi University’s roots reach back to 1863 and the founding of the Adelphi Academy, a private preparatory school in Brooklyn, New York. The Academy was incorporated in 1869 and its Board of Trustees was charged with establishing a first class institution for the broadest and most thorough training, and to make its advantages as accessible as possible to the largest numbers of our population. The school quickly gained a reputation for its innovative curriculum, particularly in physical culture and early childhood education.

The appointment of Charles H. Levermore, Ph.D., as the head of the Academy in 1893 was an important moment in Adelphi’s history. Realizing the city of Brooklyn was without a liberal arts college, Levermore seized the opportunity to establish Adelphi College. Through the efforts of Timothy Woodruff, former lieutenant governor of New York State and future president of Adelphi’s Board of Trustees, Adelphi College, with 57 students and 16 instructors, was granted a charter—one of the earliest charters granted to a coeducational college by the Board of Regents of the State of New York—on June 24, 1896. Henceforth, degrees issued bore the seals of Adelphi College and of the University of the State of New York and were signed by the officers of the College and by the chancellor and the secretary of the University. For the next 25 years, the Academy remained intact yet separate from the College.

Over the course of the next 100 years Adelphi grew and changed significantly. In 1929, Adelphi University became the first private, coeducational institution of higher education on Long Island. Since that time, more than 100,000 students have passed through our doors, leaving their mark on the University and the world beyond.

Today, Adelphi is thriving. Our colleges and schools include the College of Arts and Sciences; the Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology; the Honors College; the Robert B. Willumstad School of Business; the Ruth S. Ammon School of Education; the School of Nursing; the School of Social Work; and the College of Professional and Continuing Studies. We have reinvigorated our academic community and invested in our future. Our faculty is leading the way to ensure that our students receive the finest education in the region and that Adelphi continues to serve as a vital resource to our local communities. As we turn our strategic plan into a vision for our future, the campus community has come together to accomplish mutual goals centered on scholarship and student achievement.

While universities around the country have been eliminating faculty, Adelphi has hired more than 280 new professors since 2001. Current full- and part-time faculty total 956, with a student/faculty ratio of 10:1. To ensure that our scholars have the resources needed to reach their goals, we have invested millions of dollars in infrastructure. We have renovated our facilities; upgraded our technology and created smart classrooms; dramatically improved our libraries—both facilities and collections; and invested in new equipment, including state-of-the-art lasers for two new physics laboratories, an atomic scanning microscope and a nuclear magnetic resonance machine for the chemistry program, new pianos from Steinway & Sons, and enhanced digital music facilities to support our music and performing arts programs. An ambitious campus expansion project has, over the last decade, resulted in the completion and opening of the Adele and Herbert J. Klapper Center for Fine Arts with space for painting, printmaking, sculpture and ceramics; the Center for Recreation and Sports, containing gyms and an indoor track; the Performing Arts Center (AUPAC) includes a 500-seat Concert Hall and additional performance, rehearsal and classroom space for music, theatre and dance; an outdoor sports complex; a complete renovation of Woodruff Hall with a modern exercise room, pool, teaching gym and classroom; the Alice Brown Early Learning Center; and additional parking.

Scholars throughout the University are making significant contributions to their disciplines. In recent years, Adelphi faculty members have been recognized as Fulbright and Hartford Scholars, and have received funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. The School of Social Work is accredited for the maximum time that the accrediting agency grants. In fact, our School of Social Work was reaccredited with no recommendations for improvement by the Council on Social Work Education’s site evaluation committee, and the School’s self-study document so impressed the council that it is now used as a model in reaccreditation training sessions for other programs.

Currently, nearly 8,000 students are thriving in our classrooms, in our programs, on our sports fields at the main Garden City campus and at centers in Manhattan, Hauppauge, and Poughkeepsie. Our students have gone on to achieve awards and national recognition for their scholarship, service and leadership.

Adelphi also seeks to serve its locality, state and nation through the research and practice of its faculty; the strengthening of ties between the professional schools and community; the staging of distinguished cultural events at its campuses; and most essentially, the education of a generation of future leaders and informed citizens, professionals, and community members.

Offering a first-rate university education involves creating rich learning opportunities within and beyond the classroom. Adelphi has given top priority to introducing innovative programs that extend student learning and engagement into new realms. An outstanding example is the Community Fellows Program. Introduced in 2010, Community Fellows places undergraduate students in paid summer internships at regional nonprofit organizations. Students gain crucial on-the-job experience and knowledge while also contributing their time, expertise and skills to assist vital community organizations. In 2014, Adelphi placed about 70 students at 41 nonprofits.

Adelphi builds on a long tradition of global engagement dating back to its first president, Charles Levermore, Ph.D. As an outspoken internationalist, friend and classmate of Woodrow Wilson and recipient of the Bok Peace Prize, Dr. Levermore set an inspiring example. In 2006, Adelphi introduced its Levermore Global Scholars Program, an academic and co-curricular program designed to give select students across all majors additional exposure to global learning and service. Levermore Global Scholars can take advantage of global internships, programs with the United Nations, unique service projects and leadership training as well as individualized research opportunities. In recent years, Adelphi has expanded the study-abroad opportunities for all of its students. Today, students can choose from semester- and year-long programs as well as short-term, faculty-led intercession and summer courses in locations around the globe.

Since 2003, Adelphi has been designated as a nongovernmental organization (NGO) by the United Nations in recognition of the University’s commitment to bringing “global awareness of international issues and of the United Nations to the university community and the public.” Adelphi students are invited to participate in annual conferences with the United Nations, and Adelphi regularly hosts lectures by U.N. ambassadors.

Service-learning opportunities abound at Adelphi. Through the popular Freshman Community Action Program, incoming students volunteer for local service projects prior to the start of classes. Continuing students can pursue service learning through a growing array of faculty- and administrator-led programs during the winter, spring and summer breaks, including community outreach initiatives in Guatemala and Costa Rica and the new green and local alternative spring break on Long Island and in New York City.

Adelphi’s proximity to New York City enables students to pursue diverse interests and gain unique experiences and exposure to cutting-edge global initiatives. Leading thinkers and artists regularly come to campus to speak and perform as part of the University’s cultural events series. Students, likewise, can easily travel to New York City to soak up culture and pursue internships with leading organizations and corporations in the arts, technology, finance, media, education, healthcare, and government sectors.

Adelphi students are making their mark across academic fields and country borders. Adelphi students have garnered Fulbright Fellowships for research and service abroad. They have been recruited to leading universities for graduate work and to premier global companies, such as Google, to pursue rewarding careers. They have won prestigious scholarships, such as the Goldwater Scholarship, for their research and innovation. Students in Adelphi’s highly regarded performing arts programs have garnered numerous accolades from the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. The American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance frequently has recognized students in the physical education program for their leadership, scholarship and community service.

The Division of Student Affairs strives to create a supportive, educational environment that provides students with opportunities for growth and success through diverse experiences that are challenging, rewarding and meaningful.
