This course enables you to explore literature from the early twentieth century to the present time.
It has three core modules o moderns and others o contemporary literatures o cutting edge: twenty-first century texts. These cover all the major modes of representation - realism, modernism and postmodernism. You study these modes both in their formal and in their socio-historical contexts. You also look at poetry and prose.
There is flexibility in the modules for you to pursue your own areas of interest within these broader topics. The course focuses on aspects of literature from modernism to whatever is contemporary at the time of teaching.
The module, research methods gives you all the necessary skills and up-to-date knowledge for researching and writing at postgraduate level. It is taught by a dedicated team of tutors who are experts in contemporary literature and theory.
The course helps you to develop professional critical and analytical skills that will be of interest to many employers. It also provides ideal preparation if you are looking to advance to PhD work.
Modules
Moderns and others
This module focuses on modernist and non-modernist literatures and manifestoes in the period 1900-50. It explores key concepts, such as modernity, modernism and realism. The module examines the key critical debates about modernism and literature.
Contemporary literatures
This module considers contemporary literatures in the period 1950-2000. A range of key critical issues are addressed including
* post modernity and postmodernism
* contemporary fictional and poetic techniques
* questions of representation.
Cutting edge: 21st century literature
This module focuses on 21st century literature and experimental works of the late 20th and 21st centuries. Emphasis is placed on
* exploring new trends in content, style and media
* the relationship between identity and form in late 20th and 21st century literatures
* the impact of new technologies.
Research methodsThis module introduces you to a range of issues within literary research including
* handling resources
* engaging with theory
* intellectual property.
