Deadline: Jul 15, 2024
140 place StudyQA ranking:1644 Duration:3 years
The Modern China programme is divided into three fields. Language training in modern Chinese (Mandarin) will take up about half of the students' time. Speaking, reading and writing skills are developed equally. Several courses deal with methodological topics - basic philological methods and Chinese word processing and data research in the world wide web are taught, and students are introduced to Chinese political science and macroeconomics. Lectures and courses are offered on a variety of topics, including Chinese history, politics, ecology, media, literature, material culture, modern arts, gender studies and philosophy. Students may choose from these modules according to their own interests.

Educational organisation

Students are provided with a programme and schedule at the beginning of their studies, showing obligatory and optional courses. The degree is reached cumulatively, i.e. credit points (ECTS) are granted for all modules successfully passed and for the thesis. When the required number of credit points (180 CP) is reached, students receive their diploma without a further final examination. The final grade is calculated on the basis of the grades reached in all modules.

Study abroad unit(s)

Students are required to spend their fourth semester (1 March to 31 July of the second year) at Peking University. Courses in Beijing are organised, taught and assessed according to the Würzburg study programme's requirements and standards. The University of Würzburg together with the Universities of Aarhus and Oslo runs the European Chinese Language and Culture Programme (ECLC) at the School of International Studies, Peking University. The University of Würzburg has a permanent office on the campus of Peking University. It organises the courses as well as the students' accommodation, internships etc. A staff member of the University of Würzburg is present in Beijing for the whole semester and takes care of the students' needs.

Internships

Internships are not part of the programme. Help is however offered in finding appropriate internships in Germany and in China.

Forms of assessment

All modules must be passed with a written or oral exam at the end of each semester. Some modules require additional presentations, essays, translations or other individual work. During the sixth semester, students write a thesis (approx. 30 pages). There is no final exam.

Course objectives

The Modern China programme graduates will have a good command of spoken and written Chinese as well as a sound knowledge of a great number of aspects of 20th and 21st century China.
