Description

This distinctive four-year degree programme combines the study of either Spanish, French or Japanese honours language with international development studies, specialising in social analysis, development economics, geography or natural resources and environment of the developing world. You can begin your degree-level study if you have A level or GCSE in these languages. For Japanese or Spanish you can also start from beginners level.

The programme, jointly taught with the School of International Development, enables you to split your time between the study of your chosen language, related cultural studies and international development studies. It is designed to provide coherence and focus around core elements in relation to your main interests. Modules are careful sequenced, from a range of introductory modules in the first year, to greater specialisation, and sophistication of approach in subsequent years.

The programme is flexible, and a wide choice of modules is available for the pursuit of individual interests. The modules in development studies offer you in-depth study of topical and regional matters to complement your language skills. The topical modules will build on the cultural element studied through the language, providing a broader and more politicised perspective on your language studies.

Course Structure

This four year degree programme combines the study of French, Spanish or Japanese with international development. The third year will be spent abroad. You will take compulsory modules giving you a sound base in international development and language studies, with optional modules so you can tailor your studies to you own interests. The Course Profile tab lists all the compulsory and optional modules currently available for each year of your study.

Year 1

In year 1 core study of the Japanese, Spanish or French language is combined with cultural studies relevant to students interested in Japanese or Spanish or French speaking countries. As most students are new to development studies, the first semester provides an introductory module, explaining historical and contemporary themes linked to global change: environmental, political, social, geographical and economic.

You also choose one area of specialist study in development studies: Social Anthropology for Development, Economics for Development, Geography for Development or Natural Resources for Development.

Year 2

In year two you continue both your study of Japanese, Spanish or French language and the specialist area of development studies you chose in year one. In addition, about one third of the programme is chosen from a range of options in language and culture. This includes the chance to take a subsidiary language.

Year 3 (Year Abroad)

The third year is spent working or studying abroad. Besides the normal range of possibilities in Japan, France and Spain, there are development work experience opportunities in Spanish and French-speaking countries, for example in Senegal, Burkina Faso, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala and Peru. The year abroad is a closely monitored period of study, part of which involves documentary research on a topic relevant to the country of residence. This helps you to focus on the academic aspect of your year abroad and to prepare for the final year back at the University.

Year 4

In the final year, your language work continues at a higher level, and is accompanied by modules chosen from a range of options from both disciplines in the areas of language, culture, media and development. Example modules for the international development element may include ‘Education and International Development’, ‘Gender and Development’, ‘Public Policy and Welfare’, ‘Development in Practice’, ‘Globalisation and Economic Development ‘and ‘Wars, Humanitarian Crises and Aid’.
