This research-based course provides a highly specialised biochemical education and practical training.

It will give you the fundamental skills to enable you to enter a research career in modern biochemical research in industry or academia.

There is considerable flexibility and you will be able to focus on specialist subjects consistent with your interests and career intentions.

This course will be of great benefit to graduates in biochemistry, biology, structural biology and related disciplines.

MODULES

  • Induction
  • Three 16 or 17 week research projects, each assessed by a 7,000 word report and a viva (oral examination)
  • Three research presentations
  • Safety course
  • Technical workshops
  • Research seminars and tutorials
  • Transferable skills training

Seminars and practical demonstrations involving instruments and methodologies related to modern biochemical research include subjects such as mass spectrometry, spectroscopy, electrophoresis, DNA analysis and immunology, the use of computers for data analysis, information searching and retrieval, and molecular modelling.

The workshops and seminars in transferable skills are organised by the Graduate School.

You carry out three individual research projects over the course of the year, each lasting 16–17 weeks. Research projects are available in a wide range of subjects and you will make your choice in consultation with expert staff. The research project areas are:

  • Biological chemistry
  • Biological structure and function
  • Biophysics
  • Cell and molecular biology, including neurosciences
  • Molecular microbiology and infection
  • Structural biology
  • Glycobiology
  • Immunology
  • Molecular biosciences
  • Plant and microbial sciences

Graduates with a first class or upper second class Honours degree and a commitment to a career in biochemical research are welcome to apply.
