Three universities and one photonics research institute in the BARCELONA area offer a comprehensive Master (MSc) program in PHOTONICS, the science and technology of LIGHT. PHOTONICS is one of the disciplines that will play a key role in the technology development of the 21st century. The Master aims at educating future researchers in this field and also promoting entrepreneurial activity in PHOTONICS amongst its students. Addressed to an international audience, the Master in Photonics is conducted in English.

The field of optics and photonics is at the forefront of many highly useful technological applications in a wide range of subject matters including everything from information technology and telecommunications and applications in medicine and in industry to metrology and detection and advanced research. That is why it is important to train good researchers and professionals in this field.

Training objectives

Provide general and quality training in the different fields of photonics, taking into account basic aspects as well as applied and technological aspects. Develop in the students skills that will allow them to successfully break into industrial work and research centres.

Skills acquired

* Holding solid, general and quality training in the field of photonics, taking into account basic, applied and technological aspects.
* Interpreting the main phenomena associated with optics and photonics.
* Applying knowledge acquired, whether theoretical or experimental and technological.
* Applying scientific method to real situations and problems in different fields of photonics.
* Understanding the experimental methods and the instrumentation related to photonics as well as in the applications for photonics in science and technology.
* Gaining interdisciplinary training in order to work with professionals from other disciplines.
* Being prepared to embark upon research in the field of photonics as well as to break into the industrial sector in the field of photonic technologies.

The official duration or extent of the Master in Photonics is 60 ECTS (ECTS is the European credit unit), so that the MSc degree can be obtained in one year. The corresponding program consists of five Modules, as shown below. Election of the courses must be made in dialog with the professor who acts as students tutor, and needs his/her agreement:

Module 1.- Includes compulsory subjects, which build a solid foundation on the basics of photonics. In addition to theory it also includes practical activities on basis to lab. experiments.

Module 2.- Composed of short courses that intend fomentation of complementary skills that can be useful for future work, be it professional or research oriented. The student must choose two of such courses (the remaining courses can also be chosen, within Module 4).

Module 3.- This semi-core module is divided into three sub-modules which correspond to different aspects of photonics. The student must choose two courses from any of these submodules (the two courses need not to belong to the same sub-module).
Further courses from this module can also be chosen, within Module 4.

Module 4.- To complete this module, the student may choose any course from the semi-core courses listed in Modules 2 and 3 (different to those chosen above), and/or any course from the group of elective courses of Module 4 listed below, with a total academic load of 10 ECTS.

Before election of courses in Modules 3 and 4, the student should have a look at the
timetables, when available, to check the compatibility, in time, between different courses.

Module 5.- It corresponds to the Master Thesis (or Master Project), that the student must perform under the supervision of, in principle, one of the professors of the Master (external supervisor might also be possible, under some restrictions). It has assigned 25 ECTS.

A Bachelor's degree or equivalent ("Llicenciatura" or Engineering degree) from a recognized institution (minimum 180 ECTS or 3 years of full time study) is required. In any case, the Degree should be such that it enables the student to enrol for a Master Program in the country where such a degree was awarded.
