Description
With our BA Physical Theatre, we equip you with the necessary skills and vision to work as a creator and performer in international theatre which has, in recent years, become more physical, expressionistic and visual. Physical theatre draws its inspiration from popular forms and cultures (circus, street theatre etc), dance and mixed media. Many theatre companies, like Cirque du Soleil, now seek performers with advanced, specialist physical skills so, in addition to traditional acting skills, you are able to acquire a wide skills base in acrobatics, mask, puppetry, clowning, aerial work and mixed media
Why study BA Physical Theatre at Essex?
Our East 15 Acting School has trained actors, directors, producers and theatre technicians for stage, TV, film and radio for almost 50 years. Our dedicated approach to teaching and support was reflected in our ninth placing in the UK in the 2012 National Student Survey.
Our work is based on Joan Littlewoods famed Theatre Workshop but we are international in our outlook, regarding ourselves as a bridge between the best of British and worldwide performance traditions. We are also a member of the leading group of UK conservatoires, the Conference of Drama Schools, with many of our courses accredited by the National Council for Drama Training (NCDT).
Why study this subject?
It is not just money and success that makes you want to become an actor. There is the thrill of performance, the ability to affect an audience by creating an emotional experience, to have an artistic experience yourself in performing. In order to do this, you need to know what you are doing and a course in acting will train you for this and more. Professional musicians, athletes and dancers, embark on a lifetime of training that never ends and the same should be true for actors and those who wish to work in the theatre.
Our facilities
Our Southend Campus includes The Gateway Building, a modern, state-of-the-art building which provides fully equipped rehearsal rooms and studios with panoramic views across Southend-on-Sea.
