Description

But political science at Morris is a lot more than theory; students get involved. They participate in political clubs and organizations (the Mock Trial Club, Pi Sigma Alpha, the International Relations Club, and more), pursue their own research, deliver papers at conferences, and take active roles in the processes that create policies. Community forums are frequently convened in response to current events. Research starts at the beginning of the curriculum, and Morris undergraduates have an impressive record of publications. In the capstone seminar, seniors put their skills to work creating a comprehensive research project that is presented to the academic community.

The Political Science Discipline at Morris is a small department with a big program and history of accomplishment. The work is serious, but the atmosphere is supportive and informal. The faculty of award-winning educators and campus leaders focus on doing, bringing scholarship and engagement to the public. The Discipline is noteworthy for its strengths in both behavioral and institutional approaches to political science. Some particular specialties of the versatile faculty are: political behavior, American public policy on the state and federal level, Korean-Russian relations, comparative political theory and environmental political theory. The faculty members share a feeling of commitment as teachers and mentors, and they work individually with students during the program and after, helping graduates find internships, placements, and other opportunities that lead to successful careers.

Most importantly, Morris alumni go on to influence the political process themselves. A Political Science degree from Morris has served as a springboard to careers in politics, law, labor relations, public policy, communications and international affairs, among others. Morris graduates regularly obtain admission for advanced degrees at highly acclaimed universities.

Course Content

Political science is the comprehensive study of the behaviors, organizations, institutions, and philosophical foundations of political life at the individual, state, national, and international settings. The major program is designed to prepare students for lifelong civic engagement and leadership in democratic society, as well as intercultural competence as global citizens. The political science major curriculum stresses the development of strong analytical skills and critical thinking and prepares students for further academic training in political science, law, public administration, and other graduate programs as well as for work in public affairs, business, journalism, interest groups, and a wide range of other careers.

Students who complete the political science major are able to critically analyze and interpret political processes, problems, and challenges; understand, synthesize, and contribute imaginatively to the major research and theoretical debates prevalent in the study of American and comparative politics, international relations, and political thought; present their evidence and arguments in clear, precise language; and participate thoughtfully, knowledgeably, and ethically in civic life.

One of the primary virtues of the Political Science major at Morris is breadth. The foundation of the major are two survey courses, as well as courses in research methods and statistics. Students then take elective courses in each of the subfields (American Politics, International and Comparative Politics, Political Theory). Directed study and field studies credits may also apply towards the requirements for the major. The curriculum is completed with a senior capstone seminar focused on independent research.
