Description

Politics and political events dominate domestic and international news and impact on our day-to-day lives, as well as shaping the future. Our BA Politics and Sociology explores major areas of political science, including political systems, political behaviour and political ideas. Sociology analyses the different kinds of social tensions, interactions and networks that make up everyday life. It asks why individuals, groups, cultures and people are the way they are and how they might be different. These two disciplines offered here by two of the UKs leading social science departments - combine well together. Both pose broad questions about the world and offer practical research skills to help you to investigate these questions.

Course Content

The special characteristics of our course are flexibility and choice. In your first and second-year you will have 90 credits of compulsory modules 30 credits of optional modules. For BA Sociology and Politics your first-year optional modules can be chosen from within our Faculty of Social Science and Faculty of Humanities and Comparative Studies. Your second and third-year modules can be chosen from our Department of Sociology and our Department of Government. There is a great deal of choice for these modules. In your final year you will have 30 credits of compulsory modules and 90 credits of optional modules.
With a small number of exceptions, if you successfully complete the first year of your BA, then you are qualified to enter the second year of that course and a range of other courses: for example, if you take economics, politics, philosophy and sociology, then you have a choice of at least nine possible single or joint honours courses at the end of your first year. This means you can change your course, providing you have taken the appropriate pre-requisites and places are available.
We operate a credit framework for our awards, which is based on principles widely used across the UK university sector. Each module has a credit rating attached and our standard three-year course consists of 360 credits (120 credits in your first year, and 240 credits across your second and final years).
Please note that module information on our course finder provides a guide to course content and may be subject to review on an annual basis.
