The power engineering and renewable energies course focuses on electrical power engineering. It also covers methods of measurement and instrumentation and open and closed loop control, though not as extensively as in the automation technology course. In the last two semesters, students focus on electrical machines and electric drive generation, transmission and distribution of electric power, photovoltaics, and renewable energy systems.
Educational organisation
The first year is conducted in English (foundation courses) and includes intensive course in German. The second year in conducted in German. Students spend the fifth semester at the industrial work placement (organised in one of the many companies in the Mannheim area or abroad). The final year is conducted in German, including the final project (thesis).

Internships
The fifth semester is set aside for a six-month work placement (internship) in industry. The industrial placement has to last at least 100 working days.
Forms of assessment
Oral and written examinations are held at the end of each semester. One semester comprises 30 credits (approx.). The whole programme is worth 210 credits.

Language requirements

University/higher education entrance qualification; admission is based on the applicant's academic and professional performance in the subject concerned.

Arrival support
Upon arrival in Mannheim, experienced students and the staff of the department will help with paperwork (rental agreements, contact with local authorities, etc...).
Services and support for international students
The International Office assists and counsels international students studying at the Hochschule Mannheim. A four-week language, culture, and orientation programme is offered before the first semester. A characteristic of the programme is the individual attention students receive, as they are taught in small groups by professors and part-time lecturers who have practical experience and who focus on teaching and research.
Accommodation
Student halls of residence are run by the university's International Office in cooperation with students' social services. Reservation is possible after admission (subject to availability). The monthly rent for a single room is approx. 270 EUR.
