Psychology is the scientific study of human minds and behaviors. The main focus on humans is similar to that of humanities. However, the emphasis on scientific research methods, with a particular emphasis on experimental science, differentiates psychology from other disciplines. At the crossroads of natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences, the field of psychology not only integrates knowledge from various disciplines, but also reapplies acquired knowledge to enhance our understanding of human minds and behaviors.

Broadly, the field of psychology can be divided into two major areas: basic psychology and applied psychology. Researchers in the area of basic psychology are interested in understanding basic psychological processes of human beings. It includes experimental psychology, biopsychology, social psychology, psycholinguistics, and developmental psychology. On the other hand, researchers in the field of applied psychology focus on applying psychological knowledge in real situations. Clinical and counseling psychology and industrial and organizational psychology are considered to be in the area of applied psychology. There is a wide range of specialty areas in psychology including human physiology, cognition, personality, developmental psychology, social behaviors, and abnormal behaviors. The faculty members of the Department have been actively eng_1aged in teaching and research on a wide range of topics such as recognition, personality, biology, organizational psychology, clinical psychology, psychometrics, social psychology, developmental psychology, linguistics, and Neuroscience. Diverse research methods, such as laboratory experiments, psychological testing, observations, and quantitative analysis are employed in research with a special emphasis on laboratory experiments.
