The main purpose of the program is to give the students understanding and knowledge related to the broad aspect of making business from a sustainability perspective. Particularly, the program is related to opportunities and challenges organizations experience in respect to handling societal, environmental and climatic changes as well as interests of different stakeholders in the contemporary society.

Sustainable management of resources in the High North is of high importance and in the light of recent events, focus on cooperation between Russia and Norway in exploring and exploiting these resources will be paramount. In light of discovered petroleum resources in the High North the area has attracted much political and commercial attention, and future success relies heavily on how enterprises, authorities, NGO's, research and education institutions collectively handle challenges that are specific to this pristine region. Energy production in the High North has to satisfy a number of often conflicting and complicated criteria's, such as economical profitability, technological reliability and environmental/societal friendliness.

Sustainability can be defined in different ways, one important perspective is the ???intergenerational equity??? and that any strategic and operational actions of the organization are considered in the light of not only the economic, but also the environmental and social impact. The High North is rich in natural resources, especially fish and oil & gas and development depends on these resources. However, the ecosystem is vulnerable and, some have argued that high petroleum activity in this area may impact the major fishing stocks of Artic regions. The debate about future exploration and exploitation attracts attention from many stakeholders such as oil companies, fisheries, indigenous population, the tourism industry, policy makers and NGO's. A master program focusing on sustainable business operations in the High North contributes to improved knowledge and better ways to handle potential conflicts, keep them from escalating and initiate processes that supports dialogue and peaceful co-existence for the common good.

This program is a joint-degree program based on the ideas established in the Bologna declaration. The program is developed in the cooperation with following partner institutions in Russia:
