Background

The Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research has initiated structural reform within the higher education and research sector in Norway. The initiative, outlined in a white paper "Konsentrasjon for kvalitet" (Consolidation for quality), has a focus on consolidating resources within the sector within a smaller number of higher education and research institutions.

The government initiative formed the basis of decisions adopted by the boards of University of Nordland and University College in Nesna to investigate a merger of the two institutions effective from 1. January.2016. The decision to merge UiN and HiNe was adopted in the State Council on 19. June 2015.

The joint board of UiN/HiNe and the Board of University College in Nord-Trøndelag subsequently tasked the institutions'' rectors with investigation of a merger with HiNT. A decision to merge UiN/HiNe with HiNT was adopted in the State Council on 9. October 2015.

The new institution, Nord universitet, was established by royal decision in the State Council on 9. October 2015, effective from 1. January 2016.

The English name of the institution is Nord University.
