The Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and Performance at the University of Cape Town offers students an engaging and comprehensive exploration of the performing arts, combining practical training with critical analysis of performance across diverse contexts. This programme is designed to develop students’ creative skills, theoretical knowledge, and understanding of how theatre functions within society. Throughout their studies, participants will engage with a broad range of disciplines including acting, directing, dramaturgy, stage design, and performance studies, equipping them with versatile abilities applicable in various theatrical and performance settings. The curriculum emphasizes both traditional and contemporary forms of theatre from local and global perspectives, fostering an appreciation for diverse cultural expressions and innovative performance practices. Students will have opportunities to participate in production workshops, performances, and internships, gaining hands-on experience and building professional networks within the arts community. The programme also encourages critical reflection on performance texts, methods, and contexts, preparing graduates for careers in theatre production, arts management, education, and related fields. Faculty members are accomplished practitioners and scholars committed to mentorship and fostering creative excellence. By the end of their studies, graduates will possess a robust understanding of theatrical practices, production techniques, and performance theories, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to the cultural sector and society at large. The programme aims to nurture innovative, socially conscious artists who can adapt to the evolving demands of the performing arts industry both locally and internationally.

Compulsory (core) courses:

  • DRM5003W Theatre and Performance: Part A
  • DRM5013W Theatre and Performance: Part B
  • DRM5018W Research Project 
  • An Honours degree in Drama, or a four-year degree of Honours equivalence, or in the absence of Drama Honours, the candidate shall satisfy the Head of the Department that her/his experience/ expertise/ alternative degree(s) is/are equivalent. 
  • Certified copies of official academic transcripts in ENGLISH (full transcripts for each tertiary institution attended)
  • Certified copies of degree certificates in ENGLISH (for each tertiary institution attended where applicable)
  • Applicants from universities situated in non-English speaking countries: TOEFL/IELTS certificate OR letter from previous tertiary institution stating “English as medium of instruction” for the programme
  • Curriculum vitae (include work experience)
  • A recent score (obtained within 3 - 5 years before application for admission) of at least 570 (paper-based test) or 230 (computer-based test) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
  • A recent overall band score of 7.0 (with no individual element of the test scoring below 6.0) on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
  • OR, noting that this may only be written at certain designated venues within South Africa, a score of at least 65% on the university's Placement Test in English for Educational Purposes (PTEEP).
  • The closing date for applications is 31 October of the year before registration. Only in special circumstances, at the discretion of the Head of Department, will a late application be considered. The applicant shall submit, with the application, a portfolio of recent work and a research dissertation proposal and seek an audition/interview with a representative of the Department.
