This Masters in Urban Transport is designed to educate students to meet the needs of cities and urban areas in planning and managing surface transport systems.

The programme will provide students with the opportunity to critically engage with theory and practice in relation to working for governmental organisations and private sector consultancies in the area of transport.

The MSc in Urban Transport will help you understand stakeholders and connections with energy, environment, housing, land-use, economic development, labour markets and related sectors as well as the technical planning process.
The programme will focus on multiple modes of urban transport roads, public transport, active transport and emerging shared and intermodal transport - enabling students to design highly innovative urban transport solutions.
There will be heavy emphasis on the use of specialized software to develop transport plans, operational policies, geographical analysis, visualisation, statistical analysis and to conduct transportation impact evaluation providing students with an unprecedented advantage in the job market.

Career prospects

The programme will prepare students for successful careers in transportation planning, policy analysis and management in public sector agencies, private companies and non-profit organizations. A typical career trajectory upon graduation would be an entry or mid-level position in a government department of transport or a similar position in a private consulting firm. You will also be highly qualified to apply for a PhD in Urban Planning or Engineering.

Students will be able to choose between a variety of core and optional courses provided by the School of Social and Political Sciences and the School of Engineering. This cross-disciplinary course approach will ensure you learn industry-specific skills in both transport planning and engineering and allow you to focus more heavily on either of the two strands of the programme.

Key courses on transport will be followed by lab sessions where practical lessons on the use of highly specialised software will be given in the form of either independent or group projects.

This approach will help students to not only acquire theoretical knowledge but also to apply their knowledge to real world problems with actual data. Students will learn emerging challenges in managing urban transport in cities and how researchers can investigate them and develop solutions with advanced analytical skills.

Students will be expected submit essays and lab reports as part of the their course assessment and a dissertation at the end of the programme. Dissertation topics will be generated with the input of practitioners and datasets will be made available so as to enable practical skills-development.

Entry requirements for postgraduate taught programmes are a 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent qualification (for example, GPA 3.0 or above) in relevant fields including Urban Studies, Civil Engineering, Geography, Management and Economics. Candidates from other disciplines who otherwise meet the criteria are also considered.
