English and Creative Writing

Description

In addition to studying the works of celebrated authors, or examining the way we build our world through the language we use, you will get the opportunity to develop your own creative writing skills, through writing poetry, short stories and one-act plays.
The emphasis of the course is very much on modern literature, or on the language of the 21st century. In the creative writing part of the course, you will develop the techniques of writing for a range of different purposes: for magazines, for the Internet, for the theatre, for the radio, for cinema and for children. The English part of the course will give you insights into how language works, how we make choices when writing and how other people are writing.

Course Content

During the first year, areas of study include Approaches to English Literature, Creative Writing (Poetry and Descriptive Prose), Writing for Magazines, Language in Context and Introduction to Stylistics.

In the second year the topics include The Short Story Workshop, Creating Stories for Children, Language in the New Media Age, Style and Context, and Contemporary Fiction amongst others. You have the choice to take an optional work placement or study abroad year with this course.

The final year covers Multimedia and Screenwriting, Writing for the Theatre and Radio, plus a choice of Corpus Stylistics, Fantasy and Speculative Fiction, Postcolonial Literatures in English, Voices from the American West, Critical Discourse Analysis, Languages in the World, Language and Society in Modern Britain, Journalism, Society and Ethics, and Language of the Mind amongst others You will also write a dissertation or compile a professional portfolio related to creative writing.

Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated seminars or practical workshop classes. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

Essential Entry Requirements:

• 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C including English Language, or specified equivalents. Applicants without A2 English require GCSE English Language or Literature at grade B.

• Applicants are invited to submit three pieces of creative writing by email attachment.

Access: The Access Diploma to include 30 Level 3 credits at Merit. Access applicants can meet the GCSE requirements through their current studies and do not need to have these qualifications separately.

Funding

Merit Scholarship Scheme

Merit Scholarship scheme: £1,000, in year one only and based on academic performance.

• Available to all international students applying for full-time undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at Coventry University.
• Scholarships are allocated on the basis of academic merit. (Postgraduate applicants must hold 2.1 or equivalent, undergraduate applicants must hold A-levels or equivalent at grades BBC)
• There is no separate scholarship application process: all undergraduate applications from self-funded international students from any non-EU country and postgraduate applications from international, will automatically be considered for a merit award. You will not have to do anything, if you are successful you will be notified in due course by the International Office.

University Research Studentship Scheme

Occasionally, funding becomes available to enable the University, either centrally, through one of the faculties or from other sources, to offer research studentships in specified topics or fields of study.
