The MSc Tourism, Development and Policy is distinctive for its strong focus on policy, development issues, and the environment as the pivotal dimensions in the future of tourism. It is of interest to anyone who wants to know how to make tourism work in a sustainable way within a local, regional or national economy. It is ideal for careers that involve tourism management, market research and policy-making, such as government, consulting or research.

You will learn about the environment, planning, economics, and marketing in tourism, and begin to develop an objective and critical approach to tourism developments that will help ensure the continued value and long-term sustainability of tourism projects. This Masters offers you the opportunity to undertake work-based learning as part of your degree. You have the chance to apply what you learn in class with employers in the public, private or voluntary sector in order to enhance your employability and kick-start your professional development.

The programme is delivered through the Centre for Sport, Leisure and Tourism Studies, where cutting-edge thinking is combined with applied best practice. The course leaders, Professor Gareth Shaw and Dr Tim Coles, both advise governments and tourism authorities worldwide on policy for sustainable tourism and marketing, and have published several significant books together with numerous journal articles on tourism. They have organised major international research meetings and sit on the editorial boards of learned journals such as Tourism Geographies and Current Issues in Tourism.

In addition to the support and facilities provided by the University and the Business School, Masters Tourism, Development and Policy students further benefit from:

* guest speakers forum: a number of practitioners and researchers are invited to address the students;
* Centre for Sport, Leisure and Tourism Studies Research Seminar Programme: visiting speakers and departmental researchers from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds present the findings of their current research on topics in tourism.
