Humans have been looking to the stars and trying to understand how it all works since ancient times. Today, the curiosity may be the same, but the tools available have opened up a universe of exciting things to unearth. 95% of the universe exists in a form we still don't understand. Explore stars, galaxies, black holes, and gravitational waves — joining an international community looking for answers.
In this Physics, Astrophysics, and Cosmology degree course, you’ll deepen your understanding of the fundamental laws of physics, and apply this knowledge to the structure and behavior of some of the largest and smallest elements of existence. You will study the physical processes in the universe, which means that physics and mathematics are an important part of the program.
Astronomy and Cosmology: a program for you?
Are you a theory-oriented student interested in discovering all aspects of modern astrophysics, including observation, interpretation, simulation, and theory? Then, Astronomy and Cosmology at Leiden University is the right master’s specialization for you. This program is essentially based on combined research in astronomy and physics and is therefore open for students with a bachelor’s degree in Astronomy and/or Physics from a recognized university.
What does this program entail?
Modern cosmology is a complex, multidisciplinary research area.
The bachelor of science degree in astrophysics is designed for students who wish to go on to graduate studies in astrophysics with the goal of becoming professional astronomers. Professional astronomers generally find positions at colleges, and universities, national labs, NASA or its contractors, and in various space industries. This degree also prepares you for many jobs in related fields such as computer science, mathematics, or physics.
You will be able to make use of a wide range of tools — both in theory and application - to define the properties of astrophysical objects, and to identify the fundamental laws that govern their behavior.
The master's program’s main goal is to provide students with the essential tools for them to become outstanding research scientists in their field of choice. This degree provides the education needed for you to gain experience in high-energy physics, astrophysics, and cosmology, initiate research collaborations with scientists all over the world, and, essentially, learn how to do independent research.
Entry requirements for astronomy degrees
Usually, students with a variety of backgrounds and experience are accepted for astronomy degrees, and the entry requirements may be flexible. No particular previous knowledge or experience of astronomy is expected, but you should be able to demonstrate a strong interest in the subject. You’ll also need to show an aptitude for mathematics and physics; other sciences which may aid your application include geology, geography, statistics, environmental science, chemistry, and biology. Always check the specific requirements set by your chosen university.
As all courses will be read in English, language proficiency is mandatory. International applicants should submit the results of TOEFL or IELTS.
Job prospects
Astronomy graduates have no problem finding jobs. They find jobs not only in astronomy but also in the business sector. Depending on which master's program you choose, research, technology, or consulting. Many career paths will open up before you!
