Medical economics is a branch of economics dealing with issues related to efficiency, effectiveness, value and behavior in the production and consumption of medical services. Medical economics plays an important role in determining how to improve health indicators and lifestyle through interactions between individuals, health care providers and clinical institutions. In a broad sense, medical economists study the functioning of health systems and health-affecting behaviors such as smoking, diabetes and obesity.

The interdisciplinary bachelor's program "Medical Economics" provides students with sound specialist knowledge in economic sciences (business administration and economics), medical management and health sciences. Students learn to recognise social and socio-political problems, to analyze concepts in the field of health care and to develop their own proposals for solutions to health economic problems. This programme offers you:

• Skills for a career in healthcare that requires interdisciplinary skills in medicine, management, and politics;

• Basic knowledge to develop an interdisciplinary understanding of the field, based on the stakeholder groups relevant to healthcare (f.i. Managers, political decision makers, and doctors);

• Methods for the application of health economic instruments to support, design or implement decision making processes;

• The Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Economics often provides close teaching and research collaboration between the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine. For example, courses in medical vocabulary will provide basic knowledge for specific medical perspectives. 

The double Master's program in Medical Economics and Management is also possible and gives students the opportunity to benefit from the expertise of two universities. Students will be able to enjoy the advantages offered by the interdisciplinary approach and the participation of three faculties – the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine at the best universities. Students as a rule study at each university for one year and graduate with two Master's degrees.

Moreover, international Master's programs usually focus on how to approach current and future healthcare challenges through innovation. Students develop an interdisciplinary understanding of management, economics and innovation in the sector on a national or international scale. On completion of this program, students will be able to apply economic concepts to medical questions and actively address the challenges of today's complex and rapidly changing healthcare sector with innovative approaches.

Medical Economics provides students with the opportunity to work in public and private companies around the world. Therefore, obtaining a degree in this field at a foreign university increases the chances of employment. Medical economists apply the theories of production, efficiency, disparities, competition, and regulation to better inform the public and private sector on the most efficient, cost-effective and equitable course of action. Such research can include the economic evaluation of new technologies, as well as the study of appropriate prices, anti-trust policy, optimal public and private investment and strategic behavior.
