While Anglia Ruskin's roots date back to 1858, when Cambridge School of Art opened its doors, we're more interested in people's futures.

Today, we're one of the largest universities in the East of England, with more than 35,000 students studying at every level: from undergraduate to postgraduate, research degrees to distance learning. As well as our current students, we have 85,000 alumni in 150 countries around the world.

  • Arts, Law & Social Sciences

Whether you aim to work in the creative industries or the social sciences, the legal profession or public service, we’ll provide you with the skills and knowledge you need for professional life.

Our lively, diverse community and ambitious academic environment will broaden your horizons and help you develop your full potential - many of our courses give you the chance to learn another language, study abroad or undertake work placements as you study.

If you’re interested in art, music, drama or film, check out our packed programme of events. Together with our partners in the creative and cultural industries, we’re always working to enrich the cultural life of the university and the wider community.

Our research is groundbreaking and internationally recognised, with real social impact. We support the Cultures of the Digital Economy Research Institute (CoDE), whose projects include interactive music apps and documenting lifesaving childbirth procedures, as well as nine international research clusters, such as the Centre for Children's Book Studies and the Labour History Research Unit.

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, four of our research areas were awarded 'world leading' status, with five more achieving 'international' status. Our History and English research fields were rated among the best in the country.

  • Health, Social Care & Education

With more than 10,000 students, our faculty is the biggest provider of health, social care and education courses in the East of England.

We offer a wide range of internationally recognised degree courses, from bachelors’ to PhDs, plus many continuing professional development courses. They’re all taught or supervised by friendly and experienced staff who are keen to see you succeed.

You’ll study in an exciting, modern university which has a growing reputation for high-quality research, so you’ll mix with people at the forefront of their disciplines. We also have strong national and international links with industry, the public and voluntary sectors, and other academic institutions.

Our helpful technical and support staff will show you how to make the most of our advanced learning facilities. These include state-of-the-art simulated clinical skills laboratories that mirror real-life clinical situations, mock hospital wards and an early childhood research and resource centre. They’re the perfect places to hone your skills and prepare for your future career.

  • Lord Ashcroft International Business School

The Lord Ashcroft International Business School is one of the largest business schools in the East of England, with nearly 100 full-time teaching staff and approximately 6,000 students from more than 100 countries.

Our striking and award-winning business school building in Chelmsford, as well as new buildings in Cambridge, offer the most advanced learning technologies. We’re well-recognised for our centres of excellence by students, employers and professional bodies alike.

What makes us stand out is that our courses don't just give you sound academic knowledge – they’re at the cutting edge of current business practice and highly relevant to employers. This is owing to the close links we have with the business community and the partnerships we've developed with a wide variety of businesses and public service organisations.

We're interested in people who are confident, ambitious and ready to take the challenge of making a difference in the world of business. If that's you, we'd love to hear from you.

  • Medical Science

The Faculty of Medical Science, opened in 2014, is founded on the strong international reputation of our flagship Postgraduate Medical Institute.

Based on our riverside campus in Chelmsford, we deliver innovative and clinically relevant teaching and research across two departments:

    • Department of Allied and Public Health
    • Department of Medicine and Healthcare Science.

Thanks to our close relationships with the major clinical-care providers in the East of England, there are significant opportunities for collaboration and student placements across a variety of clinical sites.

We offer exciting opportunities for research and education in the allied health professions. We also translate science and epidemiology into health education and primary care, and deliver taught Master’s programmes to qualified medics. We have a flourishing community of PhD and MD(Res) students across all of our research fields.

Our advanced learning facilities include state-of-the-art clinical skills laboratories and simulation suites, which mirror real-life clinical situations. We also have a fantastic, modern library and a wide range of science labs and ICT suites.

  • Faculty of Science & Technology

The Faculty of Science & Technology is one of the largest of five faculties at Anglia Ruskin University.

Whether you choose to study with us full- or part-time, on campus or at a distance, there’s an option whatever your level – from a foundation degree, to a BSc, MSc, PhD or professional doctorate.

Whichever course you pick, you’ll gain the theory and practical skills needed to progress with confidence. Join us and you could find yourself learning in the very latest laboratories or on field trips or work placements with well-known and respected companies. You may even have the opportunity to study abroad.

Everything we do in the faculty has a singular purpose: to provide a world-class environment to create, share and advance knowledge in science and technology fields. This is key to all of our futures.

Anglia Ruskin’s story starts in 1858, when the art critic, patron and philanthropist John Ruskin opened Cambridge School of Art. The art school grew to become Anglia Ruskin University, and it’s still at the heart of our modern-day campus in Cambridge.

Over the years, a number of colleges and institutes have become part of Anglia Ruskin. They include the Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology (CCAT) and the Essex Institute of Higher Education (formerly the Chelmer Institute – itself formed from the Mid-Essex Technical College and the Brentwood College of Education). At first, these colleges combined to become Anglia Polytechnic, and then Anglia Polytechnic University in 1992. We’ve been known as Anglia Ruskin University since 2005.

We’re proud to count graduates of all these institutions among our alumni.

Sport and Active Anglia

Get active and learn new skills with Sport and Active Anglia. There’s something for everyone, whether you’re a complete beginner or a talented athlete. You can join clubs and teams if you want some regular exercise or competition or, for those who would rather take part in more social activity, there are plenty of Campus Sport sessions which are a fun way of getting active. You can attend studio classes, or book our sports halls for your own team games. There are loads of great facilities on campus and we offer useful discounts and rewards schemes.

Joining a club or attending social sessions are both great ways to meet new people and enjoy being active.

The Students' Union offers a huge range of societies, from alternative music to animal welfare, and Harry Potter to Dr Who. We also have course-specific societies where you can meet people who are studying similar subjects to you. Any student can join a society, and new members are always welcomed. If we don’t have the society you’re looking for, you can start one!

We offer relevant and practical degrees

Our courses are designed to be not only relevant to the needs of industry and the professions, but also engaging and stimulating with the emphasis on the acquisition of practical skills.

Our graduates have great prospects

Our Employer Mentoring Scheme is highly-regarded, and has Home Office recognition. The scheme has been designed to support 2nd year undergraduates in thinking about, and planning for, the transition from study to work. Each student is carefully matched with a mentor from their chosen career field, who volunteers time to provide skills-building, support and encouragement.

Our on-campus recruitment agency, the Employment Bureau, also support students in finding part-time work whilst studying, and full-time employment after graduation.

We're one of the most socially inclusive universities in the UK

Over 96% of our students come from state schools.

We take pride in making international students feel at home

We were ranked top three in the UK for our Welcome, Arrival and Orientation Programme for new international students in the autumn 2010 International Student Barometer, an independent survey of current international students at UK universities.

We care about our students

Our Student Services provides a range of academic guidance and professional services, including careers and personal and counselling support services. Our support doesn't end at graduation

We're in touch with over 60,000 alumni in more than 140 countries.

Our former students include: Pink Floyd members Syd Barrett and David Gilmour CBE, Ronald Searle CBE (creator of St Trinian's), Peter Fluck and Roger Law (creators of Spitting Image), David Driver (Head of Design at The Times), Nicholas Crane (presenter of Coast and Great British Journeys), former Attorney General Baroness Scotland of Asthal, and Lord Ashcroft KCMG, one of the outstanding businessmen of his generation.
