Polytechnic University of Bari is a research University that, according to Italian laws, focuses its activity upon the studies of Engineering and Architecture; it is one of the three Italian Polytechnics and the only one in the South of Italy. Polytechnic University of Bari offers a wide range of study opportunities, consisting in eight First Level Degree courses, eleven Second Level Degree courses and two Five-Year Second Level Degree courses, along with many Postgraduate courses and Ph.D.’s. Most of the structures are at the university Campus "Quagliariello", located in via Orabona, whereas some other departments are in neighboring areas. In particular some structures, mostly parking lots and offices, are located at Scianatico (via Amendola) and important technological laboratories are located at Japigia. The latter is also the seat of DMMM (Department of Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics and Management). Students at the Polytechnic of Bari can spend extended periods abroad within several cooperation programs with outstanding foreign universities. In some cases, there are Double Degree programs that allow students to obtain at the same time the second-level-degree diploma at Bari and a Master of Science from the foreign hosting university.

Polytechnic University of Bari is an international centre of excellence which pursues "the cultural, scientific and technological progress through the organization of research in scientific, technological, humanistic and economic-social fields and of higher education mainly in architecture and engineering, as well as the processing and the transfer of the most advanced scientific and technological knowledge, for the development of the society and the territory".

Following the reform initiated with the Italian law Legge n. 240 of 2010 and successive modifications, the Polytechnic University of Bari has organized its structure prominently based on departments with an aggregation into 5 big departments, most of which divided into branches:

  • Department of Electric Engineering and Computer Engineering
  • Department of Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics and Management
  • Department of Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Construction Engineering
  • Department of Architecture
  • Department of Physics (named after Michelangelo Merlin)
  • Department of Chemistry
  • Department of Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics and Management

  • Department of Electrical and Information Engineering

  • Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture Sciences

  • Department of Civil, Environmental, Land, Building and Chemical Engineering

The Polytechnic University of Bari was established with Italian law Legge n. 245 of 7 August 1990. It is the youngest among the Italian polytechnic universities (the other two being Politecnico di Milano and Politecnico di Torino). When the well-established Faculty of Engineering and the newly-founded Faculty of Architecture, which at that time were both part of the University of Bari, were brought together. Later the Second Faculty of Engineering was created in Taranto. The Faculty of Engineering, which dates back to 1943, at that time only offered a Civil Engineering Degree Course.

Over the course of time, degree courses in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Management Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Building Engineering–Architecture, together with an Industrial Design Degree Course, were added. Even though other Italian universities also incorporate engineering and science faculties, Italian polytechnic universities are focused on technological faculties and subjects.
