About the Technische Universität Wien

TU Wien is one of the most prestigious universities of technology in the world by presenting a top level of research and education.TU Wien is among the most successful technical universities in Europe and is Austria’s largest scientific-technical research and educational institution. As a university of technology, TU Wien covers a wide spectrum of scientific concepts from abstract pure research and the fundamental principles of science to applied technological research and partnership with industry. For nearly 200 years, TU Wien has been a place of research, teaching and learning in the service of progress.

TU Wien has eight faculties lead by deans: Architecture and Planning, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Sciences, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Mathematics and Geoinformation, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, and Physics. 

The University is led by the Rector and four Vice Rectors (responsible for Research and Innovation, Academic Affairs, Infrastructure as well as Human Resources and Gender). The Senate has 26 members. The University Council, consisting of seven members, acts as a supervisory board.

  • Faculty of Architecture and Planning

    The Faculty of Architecture and Planning at the Vienna University of Technology is one of the most prestigious study, research and teaching institutions in Central Europe. Your social dimensions are Architecture, Urban Planning and Regional Planning. The understanding of the interactions between architecture, planning and society is an integral part of contemporary design and planning practice.
    We are the Austrian architectural and planning school with an international outlook. We guarantee demand-oriented and practical professional teaching and research at the highest university level. We impart this knowledge with reference to cultural and ethical perspectives.

    There are 6 departments and Civil Engineering Computer Laboratory.

    The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the TU Wien is facing up to developments that will dominate the world in the 21st century. These developments are significantly driven by technological advances explored and developed by our faculty. In addition to the worldwide progressive networking of people and technical systems, these technologies allow for unlimited spatial and temporal access to information and increased technological support in all areas of life and industrial production, as well as  secure and sustainable energy supply  and distribution. The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology is ready to make its contribution to technical and scientific knowledge in order to fully address society’s challenges. Promoting technical progress in the faculty’s core topics for the benefit of society is just as fundamental for us as our commitment to responsibly conveying technical knowledge and work methods.

    The Faculty of Mathematics and Geoinformation consists of 4 Departments:

  • Faculty of Physics

    The Faculty of Physics operates the very latest experimental and theoretical basic research, as well as applied research projects in international cooperation with recognized research institutes and universities.

  • Faculty of Technical Chemistry

    The Faculty of Technical Chemistry has had a long tradition that goes back to the foundation years of the Technical University of Vienna. Today the Faculty of Technical Chemistry holds three current research as well as a first-class, research-led teaching.

  • Faculty of Informatics

    The Faculty of Informatics at TU Wien is the gravitational center of informatics in Austria. Our faculty is the country’s largest research and educational institution in the area of informatics and business informatics.The faculty consits of seven institutes and the central services “Office of the Dean” and “Coordination and Communication Center” (ZKK).

History of the Technische Universität Wien

TU Wien looks back on a long tradition at the leading edge of scientific research and education: Founded in 1815 as k.k. Polytechnisches Institut (Imperial and Royal Polytechnical Institute), it was divided into 5 faculties in 1865. One year later the first freely elected rector was inaugurated.

In 1872 its name changed to Technische Hochschule (College of Technology), and in 1902 the first doctorates were awarded. The institution has borne its current name – Technische Universität Wien (TU Wien) – since 1975. In 2004 TU Wien reached full autonomy through the University Act 2002.

Student life

Culture

As a student in Vienna, you are eglible for a number of reductions. For example there are special last minute student tickets for the "Burgtheater", "Staatsoper", "Musikverein" and "Volksoper" that only cost 7€. Most museums in Vienna like the MUMOK, Albertina, Belvedere and MAK charge students between 1,80€ and 5€. List of all museums in Vienna
It's also very easy to get from Vienna to the Slovak capital Bratislava. You can either take the Twin City Liner - a speed boat travelling along the Danube - or one of the 99 trains that go between Vienna and Bratislava each day. There is even a "Night Liner" train which departs from Vienna at 00:17 and from Bratislava at 05:00.

Nightlife

There are numerous bars and pubs in Vienna, covering all styles of music, from live-jazz to electronic sounds. Furthermore you can see many popular artists at the Stadthalle.

Sports

Students in Vienna can also take part in sport activities offered by the University Sports Institute.

Nature

Furthermore there are many ways to spend your spare time outdoors: There are many parks and green spaces in Vienna. The Donauinsel is only 8 minutes away from Vienna University of Technology, if you take the underground. Not much further away is the Wienerwald, which covers over 1000 square kilometres and is one of the premier outdoor recreation areas for Vienna.
To the east is the Neusiedlersee, the second largest steppe lake in Europe at the Austrian-Hungarian border. Besides being an important wildlife habitat, it also offers opportunities for sailing, windsurfing and fishing.

Getting Around

A "semester ticket" for the public transport in Vienna (Wiener Linien) costs around 100€ per semester and is available at the major stations. If you plan on using the train outside Vienna, you should buy a "Vorteilscard", which offers around 50% discount for the Austrian railways.
