Course Content

Course Characteristics

In the International Media and Entertainment Management programme you will be taught everything about the use, structure and application of (mass) media such as television, radio, events, outdoor advertising, direct mail and the Internet. You will learn to develop market-oriented concepts, programmes and productions, using media techniques and information and communication technology (ICT).

The regular track of this programme takes four years, but Dutch students with a vwo diploma can be fast tracked. This may also be available to foreign students, depending on their previous education.

Course planning

First year

In the first year, you are introduced to the media landscape both at home and abroad. You learn about subjects in marketing, production, content orientation and management.

  • The marketing courses are: Project Management, Market Research Financial Management and Marketing and Communication
  • The production module introduces pre-production, production and post-production of audio-visual content.
  • The content orientation module teaches you how to recognise good content, by following courses in story analysis and digital history.

Main phase

In the second year of study, the subjects of management, marketing, communication and research are dealt with in greater detail. You learn to develop ideas or concepts for advertising campaigns, television programmes and multimedia events.

You learn in detail about production techniques of ‘classic’ media, such as radio and television. You also learn more about the organisational and commercial side of the work. How do you make sure that a project is completed in time - before the deadline - and within budget? How do you manage people and their creative differences?

In the final part of the second year, students do a three-week training programme in live television production at an exchange university overseas like Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff in the United States. A professional, state-of-the-art television studio will be at your disposal!

After the second year, you choose a specialisation:

  • Marketing
  • Production
  • Content

The third and fourth years serve to further explore this specialisation; in addition, students step into the working world to apply their knowledge and experience.

Throughout the entire programme, you will work in the mADE Production House one day per week. You will also be working on your English language skills, both orally and in writing.

Specialisations

In the International Media and Entertainment Management programme you specialise to become either a marketeer or a producer.

  • Marketing
A marketeer develops strategic plans for the promotion and communication of a product or brand. You know what the competitors are doing and you define the marketing strategy. What is the target group? What is your message? What kind of media will you use? In this process, you employ interactive marketing techniques and database marketing. You supervise people involved in this process. You have a commercial mindset and a sixth sense for detecting trends in the market.
  • Production
A producer provides the shape and content of the chosen media and entertainment products for the promotion of a brand or product. Just think of magazines, CD-ROMs, musicals, television shows and websites. You coordinate the editing and production process, which implies you have to be good at planning and organising. You are cost-conscious, enjoy cooperating with others, have excellent language skills and are familiar with technology.
  • ContentA content specialist actually is a storyteller who knows how to engage his target group. He is the creative mind behind a media concept and responsible for the development of that concept into completed content. You create meaningful media experiences, with creativity as one of your main tools.

Fast track

If you already have a vwo diploma, a ‘Hochschulreifezeugnis’ (Abitur) or a comparable pre-education, International Media and Entertainment Management may be able to offer you the opportunity of completing the programme in just three years. The fast track will start as from September 2014.

Three-year track: how does it work?

Year 1

In this year you will follow a curriculum that combines both the 1st and 2nd years of the regular 4 year programme. You will follow all 5 ‘learning lines’ of Content, Production, Marketing, General and Research, covering courses such as Fundamentals of Storytelling, Web Design and Development, Camera and Audio, Media Planning, Financial Management and Qualitative Research.

The theory learned will be applied in our mADE Production House by working on projects and you will be supported by a Study Coach who will also help you to prepare for your company internship in Year 2.

Year 2

The first half of this year you will do your internship in a company either in The Netherlands or abroad. When you return you will commence your specialization in either the Content, Production or Marketing streams. You will also continue to study the General and Research learning lines covering courses such as Business Models and Research Methodology. For those specializing in Content, courses include Transmedia Storytelling and Content Analysis. For those in Production, courses include International Producing and Mobile Application Development. Marketing courses include Direct and Database Marketing and Online Marketing.

Year 3

Your final year involves completing your specialization courses and then entering your graduation phase which involves writing a thesis. The graduation phase can be undertaken through a work placement with a company, again either in The Netherlands or abroad.

NB Either the internship or the graduation should be followed abroad.
